The Mysterious Gravity Belt

By Swordbeard Gunfist, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm going to assume it is a combination Anti-Grav Chute/Utility Belt. (Utility Belt is normally 25 Credits, the Anti-Grav Chute is Encum 1 (450 Credits)... So it's basically buying two Utility Belts (25 each) for a total of 500 Credits) this is balanced by price and rarity.

Based on my understanding of braces and holsters, I believe that the gravity belt may instead be an extremely lightweight storage devices. When thinking of a belt the flies, all I can think is "ouch, why do I do this to my ribs". Perhaps it can simulate gravity, allowing for easy movement in a zero-gravity environment, but the waist mounted gravity chute seems somewhat, flawed and painful. I think that it is rather an advanced utility belt. After all, the backpack and the surveyors bag cost the same but the one increases the encumbrance threshold by three more than the other.

What is happening here? Something's going on that's not quite clear. Somebody turn on the lights....

we're gonna have a party, It's starting tonight!

OOOOOOOOH WHAT A FEEEELIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!

WHEN WE'RE DANCING ON THE CEEEEEILLIIIIIIIIIING

Now I have the mental image of synchronized ceiling-dancing Stormtroopers. It is a good image :D

Making movement in zero G easier sounds reasonable. The way artificial gravity is used in star wars this makes a as much sense as the parachute belt.

But every man who has ever worn a security harness belt for climbing can tell you that it is a VERY uncomforting idea to have one of those catch your free fall. Yikes.

Um, folks... You're overthinking it. The gravity belt use antigravity/repulsor tech to hold up pants. That's it, nothing more.

The grav belt is designed to help this guy:

Nope. It's just an error.

The gravity belt was originally published in Galladinum's Fantastic Technology back in the WEG days. It was a device that was mechanically similar to the grav chute.

FFG has referenced WEG, and fantastic tech, several times. This was likely to be the same, but somewhere in editing they changed their minds and went with the chute instead, but forgot to remove it from that table.

I suppose if someone decides to use the belt it's all up to the GM. I just wished to broaden the spectrum on the subject. I must say though, I am a lot more used to games that deal in measurements and movement, instead of increments and complete narrative (comparatively), and this wonderful game is a new experience.

I could swear this question came up and was answered in a developer interview on O66. The answer was exactly as you state: it was an error that was supposed to be removed, so it's up to players and GMs to define it more.

Note that kaosoe has already posted the official answer to this question, back in 2014. See https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/97917-the-mysterious-gravity-belt/#entry968083

Yeah , wookiepedia suggests a human-sized wearer c ould hover several meters off the ground and simulate flight via repulsorlift technology, and that said device is often used by performers.

By the Force, I did that, didn't I? I'm usually so careful.

They did include a Grav-chute that does the job of preventing you from taking falling damage, so I don't think it's for that. I guess it's just a sort of super cheap, psuedo flying device? I'm just hungry for an official description. It is, for some reason, driving me mad.

Well I asked the game developer who created the book at FFG he said the Gravbelt was supposed to have been removed from the book as it effectively was the same as the Grav-chute. So it is the same in that sense. However, he went on to say it can be what ever your GM wants it to be. For example a belt that lets you ignore the effects of low, high, or zero gravity environments.
