Obligation and Duty

By DrNate, in Game Masters

While I wait for my sweet, cheap copy of the AoR beta to ship to me, I am reading the pdf that lists all the additions and revisions to the game, and one section in particular got me wondering.

There are four options now, if a GM would like to mix EotE and AoR. All characters have Duty, all characters have Obligations, all characters have both, or players get to individually decide from the above choices.

Which option are you using? (Or, if waiting for AoR, which are you planning to use?)

I leave it up to the players and their characters. I try to let the players take center stage to the game rather than the GM making characters play X Career and Specialization.

I don't see a point of using Duty unless the characters are either closet Rebel sympathizers or out-and-out members of the Rebellion.

I think it'd be more fun to have Obligation in an AoR game than Duty in an EotE game, but that's just because I prefer the grey-area, play-all-sides aspect of Edge over Edge characters flat-out going Rebel.

Duty in an Edge game doesn't have to be associated with the Rebel Alliance. It could just easily be towards another organization, such as Black Sun.

At the moment, I'm only using Obligation. Once AoR proper comes out, I'll use the "and" option, with the caveat that all players must have Obligation, while the ones who care to be part of the Alliance may have Duty. (If they have no other ideas, the latter players can use Dutybound as their Obligation.)
