If I have my max health (for example 4) and I land on the Place, Pool of Life. Am I able to take a life that would then have me at 5 health? Even though this is beyong my natural maximum?

Other Place cards like Magic Stream which give someone an additional strength per landing make sense that you can grow beyong your base strength because it's clear that you can increase your strength and Craft because this is also done by cashing in trophies.

Too lazy to check, but IIRC Pool of Life says "gain" not heal. If it says gain, you can go above starting value.

Yes, the Pool of Life states - "You may bathe in the Pool once per visit and take one life from the Pool to add to your own lives." So you may go above your Life Value.
