Do items apply to allies & other ally-related question

By zeb, in Runebound

Hi,

I searched answers to these questions in the forum, but there is no advanced search engine, so it is not easy. So could you help me answer this:

  1. Do items apply to allies too ? For instance, is it possible to activate one weapon or armor for an ally ? Similarly, do permanent items also apply to allies ?
  2. Since it is not possible to improve allies with experience counters, don't they become useless at the end of the game, when your hero has improved a lot ? Against hard challenges, they cannot fight anymore and the hero is the only one to attack/defend. I know there are some special abilities though, but that's all. Am I playing this right ?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

You can't activate Items for Allies and "Always-on" Items don't give bonuses to Allies. There's no precise statement on the Rulebook, but Items are always defined as "weapons, armor, and other equipment your Hero is carrying". Only the Hero carries/uses Items.

It's true, Allies become gradually unable to aid your Hero in combat, especially against Red Challenges. With some exceptions like Jirta the Fierce, Allies have low Attributes to face the tougher foes. Anyway, they are excellent for defensive purposes (so called "meat shields") and some special Abilities are useful at every stage of the game. My gaming experience has brought me to consider some lesser Allies more valuable than the high cost ones, for example Burning Priest and Rune Seeker, because they're always effective. Silver Jack and Sir Loren, on the contrary, are almost useless when you are about to face Blue Challenges.
