So I loaded Vassal...now? (Etiquette Questions)

By AlexW, in X-Wing

So, realizing it might be a good way to get in more X-Wing, I loaded up Vassal. I've followed those great video tutorials (thanks for those!) and even have a rebel and imperial squad ready to go. I have a couple etiquette questions.

1. Do people set up games before (and, so where?) or just hop on the server on and find someone to play?

2. Starting out, do you ask to observe a game or two or just go find a game?

3. I notice the game has all the templates, but that there are also automatic ship moves in the ship menu. Do you use still use the templates?

4. Do most people use the chat when playing or some version of skype, etc..

5. Any other things worth knowing when starting out -- or a place where I can go read up on it?

Thanks in advance!

TeamCovenant.com is the hub of Vassal X-Wing action. Right now a 70+ player tournament is happening. I recommend signing up for a free account there and join in the discussion. There will be another large tournament when this one finished probably by March.

  1. Unless you are in the tournament most people just hop on and click the blue ! to notate that you are looking for a game or you can just ask someone in the main room.
  2. You can actively join any game as an observer. No need to ask. If someone doesn't want viewers they lock the room.
  3. Everyone uses the auto moves in the ship sub menus. You only use the templates for barrel rolls or to if you are going to collide with another ship, or to check and make sure your template wouldn't have crossed an asteroid.
  4. Most just use the Vassal chat window when playing.

Enjoy, it's a great way to play people all over the world including the two reigning World Champions and many of the top players from Gencon and Worlds.
