I have a Toydarian player, Any advice??

By Atraangelis, in Game Masters

Hi there,

I happen to have a player who will be playing a Toydarian!

As a GM, What things do i need to take into account with a toydarian PC??

Although i think i will be able to integrate the character just fine, i am cought off guard with this race as i know there are limitations and expectations.

Any advice would be welcome.

When planning encounters don't forget they hoover! This had slightly changed the dynamic for some encounters in my group, though nothing too drastic.

Yeah, hover is probably the biggest issue I see. Terrain won't be much of an obstacle, so you'll want to do something appropriate against that player so it doesn't always seem like that player has a free pass.

Other than that, make sure one of the npc's has a giant flyswatter available. ;)

They smell good.

Remember that they don't accept Republic Credits (they need something a little more real) and that mind tricks do-not-a work on them, only money.

Oddly, there are no downsides to Silhouette 0, so a Toydarian can carry just as much as anyone else. Raise Brawn up a bit and you can lug around a heavy blaster rifle and/or a vibro-ax as well as anyone.

I'd have to say that a force using NPC could push them around pretty easily.

Thanks for the advice, but i think i was not clear on my request.

I guess i am a little concerned that i may not be able to provide a game condusive to a toydarian.

I always imagined my PC's selecting the more humaninstic looking aliens including a wookie as i could imagine them faring out over time and space.

But I guess my thoughts were Toydarians are more sednetry and not big explorers?? So.. what would the motivations for exploration, what would be the hooks?

Perhaps this is the question as aGM i am trying to ask. Mind you I have not approached the player as i want them to play the PC. IM really looking for advice on how i can ensure i am inclusive to the Race when playing...

Does this make sence??

OR perhaps this is really nothing at all and im just being a little cought off guard having a Toydarian. Hrmm..

There's nothing particularly sedentary about Toydarians. They can be every bit the action hero as other species (although I'd suggest increasing Brawn and Agility to at least 2s). I'd try to engage this particular character's motivation(s) rather than trying to figure out how to engage a 'typical Toydarian'.

Why do you feel you need to do something specific for Toydarians?

What kind of character does the player want to play?

While it's true that a lot of Star Wars races have default or standard personality or culture types, a Player Character can be anything the player wants. He doesn't have to be a greedy, conniving trader just because Watto in Episode I was like that.

On the one hand, it's fun to have details about culture and background at your fingertips to add flavor to the game, but you can research Wikipedia and the movies and TV shows for that. (They go to Toydaria in The Clone Wars a couple of times and meet the planet's King, but there's not a whole lot regarding their culture there.)

I'd just focus on the personality and character type the player wants to play. Do they want to play an explorer, an investigator, an action hero, a charmer, etc?

Excelent.. I think you hit it on the head there. I fully realize the toydarian is not a combat PC. and as a GM i want to be sure to make the game as exciting for that Character in those aspects where they excel than in combat say for one or two other players.

Why do you feel you need to do something specific for Toydarians?

I really think it was an issue of unfamiliarity on my part as a GM on how the race playes. But as another poster said.. "Engage thier motivations" this i think was the concept i needed to understand so i can ensure they have fun.

If I recall, in the Clone Wars, Toydiarians had a huge emphasis on diplomacy and order, which would make Watto atypical for the species. An occurrence that is usually backwards, in Star Wars.

There's really nothing specific to Toydarian PCs that you can't also account for in other PCs. There's no unified personality or anything. Just remember that they hover and, while there's no mechanical bonus to back it up, they have a resistance to Force manipulation. If you want, throw a setback die in the pool if someone's trying to use a mind trick; otherwise, they're a pretty straightforward species.

While knowing culture and other background info can be good, in the end it's down to what the player wants to do. Ask him why he chose to be a Toydarian. You'll probably find that a lot more informative for your particular game than anything we can tell you.

When planning encounters don't forget they hoover!

Are you saying that they abuse power while dealing will allegations of homosexuality or are you saying that they're vacuums?

Well, they do suck…

I forget, are they flat-out immune to the Influence power in the RPG, or just better at resisting it?

I have always assumed that just about any species has their own version of an Action Hero, so just about anyone can aspire to greatness...

I forget, are they flat-out immune to the Influence power in the RPG, or just better at resisting it?

They have some descriptive text saying that they are immune, but nothing at all in the game rules aside from a starting Willpower 3.

Yeah, there's nothing that gives them a mechanical edge over Influence, but if you wanted it, you could add a Setback die to any attempt.

Or, alternatively, you could chalk Qui-Gon's underperformance to a lack of interest in subtle Force maneuvers. He always struck me as a cowboy Jedi, anyway.

you mean you have a player whose character is a Toydarian, right? * :P *

i scanned the responses, but didn't see any mention of EotE sourcebook "enter the unknown." (if someone already mentioned this, sorry, i'm being repetitive...). it includes rules for Toydarian PCs, IIRC.

My advice? Don't worry about it. If he's good at role playing, it'll be fine. If not, you got a character who do stuff while the real players move your story along.

If you feel like getting the player more in his role, get him to talk with a deep unctuous voice.
