Crown Regent - Timing Question

By HastAttack, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

"After a player initiates a challenge and declares a target and attackers, you may use this title to make that player choose a new target for the attack..."

Reading that, I have to wonder why I am asking this question - but it cropped up in a game last night and I lost the vote 2:1

Player A declared an attack on player B using Margery Tyrell (The one that can kneel someone to put them in the challenge as a defender)

Player B wanted to re-direct the challenge and was allowed to redirect it before any attackers had been declared ... i.e. to wiggle out of Margerys effect

I don't see how they can do that ... they could redirect but Margery's ability would be triggered first and a character would still be knelt and participating as a defender

Some issues have also cropped up with Crown Regent and Dragon Sight

Here I assume that the original target can just declare no attackers, and after the attacker has declared his attackers the challenge can be redirected ... at which point it is too late for the new defender to declare any defenders?

Sorry - got another query ...

I beleive the Crown Regent should redirect the challenge at the start of the player action window (between attackers being declared and defenders being declared)

However - ofter the person holding Crown Regent will wait to see what player actions are carried out - i.e. if the attacker gives some character extra strenght or deadly, the holder of the CR decides they no longer fancy the challenge and redirects

Should this be allowed - should the attacker be allow to rewind their player actions

thanks

No offense, but you are playing Crown Regent incorrectly. It is not a player action. It is a game mechanic that takes place immediately after attackers are declared/knelt. If it helps, think of the Title as adding a 3rd framework event to the "initiate challenge" framework - so in addition to "1. Active player announces challenge type and defender" and "2. Active player declares/kneels attacking characters", there is "3. Crown Regent player may redirect the challenge."

With that proper timing in mind, it should be clear that the Crown Regent cannot redirect "before any attackers are declared." They have to wait to see if Margaery is declared or not. However, the redirect comes BEFORE any passives or Responses to initiating the challenge or declaring/kneeling attackers. Margaery will always be against the new, redirected defender, never the original. It should also be clear that since Crown Regent redirects before any passives or Responses, the redirect cannot come after seeing what buffs might or may not be triggered.

Your Dragon Sight result ends up being correct, though. The redirect comes after the ONLY framework opportunity to declare defenders, so the new player is SoL, unless they have jumpers or Naval, or if the original defender declared defenders (which would still be participating).

The redirect from Crown Regent happens before Margaery's Response is triggered, so Margaery will affect a character controlled by the new defending player.

As for the interaction of Crown Regent and Dragon Sight, see this thread, responses #10/11:

My timing with the crown regent is a little iffy but i believe it works like this.

Active player 1 goes to declare challenge against player 2 who has CR.

Go to first frame work action, declare challenge type and opponent. Go next frame work action, declare attackers, in this case Margaery Tyrell.

Then we have the save/cancel window for the framework event and Im pretty sure at this point, and that point only, can the CR title be used to force the active player to choose a new target.
