How does everyone feel about Proxies?

By The Imperial Rebel, in X-Wing

Personally i did my first 9 Proxies today and i'm very happy with them. But what do you guys feel about them? Would some of you go as far as to if you were at a game store tell someone you won't play if they use them? I'm really just curious on what everyone thinks of them and who uses them.

I feel like you could play this game with nothing but the ship bases and the templates if you really wanted to. Personally, I like using all the ships, tokens, and even cards.

I'm okay with someone using proxies to experiment with new builds, I've done my fair share of that with Magic. If, however, someone is using proxies as a crutch because they don't want to fork over the money, then I would probably ask them to play with what they own. I mean, if you can't come up with a viable build that doesn't involve purchasing four shuttles, then you probably shouldn't be playing the game.

I understand were your coming from, but personally i'm on a very tight budget and so i'm printing cards not to have more of the card, but to have the card. I printed PTL, R2, R5-D8, ENG Upgrade, Stealth DEV, Shield Upgrade, Draw There Fire, Deadeye and Howlrunner. I Plan on getting The Tie, Falcon and Slave I fairly soon and wanted to test out some cards for those. But i have close to no interest in the A-wing and Y-wing, which each have 2 upgrade cards i wanted. Really, other then quality what's the difference between a card made in a factory, or my printer?

Personally I feel that since I had to fork over the cash, so should most everybody else.

That being said, if we are playing casually I probably would be polite and allow you to use whatever you want. But I don't like it, and would be rather pissed if someone tried to enter a tournament with proxies.... even a free tournament.

I am in favor of proxies, because they foster more players on a more fanciful basis.
I also feel that proxies shouldn't be allowed in tournaments, to help support the folks who make this wonderful game.

I agree about Tournaments, but just playing regularly i'm talking about.

yeah just playing casually it's ok.... but my inner-jerk still kinda doesn't like it. maybe it's because I think to myself - "Well WTF did I buy those 2 slaves and those 2 Lamda's for when I could have just printed my own cards out and stuck a slinky on the board as a proxy.

I see where your coming from. Don't worry if enough money comes through i'll get all the ships so i won't have to use them anymore. ;)

That's the general way with it. Folks aren't content to use proxies, but it lets them play the game until they can get the real deal.

I'm fine with it in general, though if we're doing a truely epic 500 point monster or something it would feel cheap if half a flight group was made up of random office supplies.

Well that and most of the people I play with retain rules like a colander does water so I sometimes need double the cards just to keep the game moving.

If it's any type of game where there are prizes involved proxies should not be allowed. If you have a group of players in a tournament setting with no prizes I'd say it's ok.

I feel it's fine for casual play.

How odd a response...

We all agree about tournys, any competitive play needs the clarity and the game needs the support. Personally I don't mind printed cards but kind of think this game is a bit like a card collecting game but wouldn't cry about a mate just using a list builder or something.

I'd be against people using things that are not at least representative - if your coaster is the same size as a firespray that doesn't count :-). However I'd b happy for people to use ships from other companies - Starwars is a big universe after all

I'm a bit surprised how many people seem against proxies on the principle that they bought their own ships and it's not fair if you don't! Ha, human nature I guess!

Upgrade cards, fine for casual play, no go for tournaments, even local tournaments for me.

Ships and bases...absolutely not. You want to run it, buy it. The correct (read, official FFG) bases are essential to playing the game correctly, as are the ship tokens for the bases. I would refuse to play against someone who wanted to use proxies models for an officially available released ship.

Jim

Proxies of ships or bases? Never.

Proxies of cards, tokens, etc.? No problem when playing casually with me, but if I played at a game store with strangers or mere acquaintances, I wouldn't want my opponents using proxies.

Tournament rules are tournament rules.

There was a time when I would have cared, but anymore I can't. If you and your friends are alright with using proxies than go for it. I discovered the 4 ps6 PTL interceptor list back in September through proxies. It's just a game, fun should really be the main priority

I agree. I have never used proxies. If I needed a certain card, I payed for the ship to get it. I am on a tight budget too and I managed to get what I needed so far. The only time I think its ok to use proxies is for sets that havent come out yet and never for tournaments. Sure I can save money and print out any card I want but I would much rather buy the sets for them and support FFG so they can continue to release more awesome ships and cards. Just my opinion. Not meaning to offend anyone so I apologize if I did.

I generally don't, because I believe the limitations enforced by not having every single upgrade in high quantity engenders creativity in list-building. I could print out ten PTL cards and stick them on all my EPT-endowed ships, but where's the thrill of discovery in finding out that card A happens to work really well with ship B?

Well I suppose it depends on when and where you play: if you are playing an official tournament it's just simple decency to FFG that you use their produce to resemble the craft used. Also this is mere courtesy to your opponents so that they can easily recognise the craft they're fighting.

If you are playing in a home or club environment and your opponent agrees when asked before, well I see no objections whatsoever.

I play all my "official" games using FFG stuff and have obtained quite a large amount of 1 inch fighters from a different producer to play within my house with my regular opponent.

I feel it's fine for casual play.

Just to clarify... I only accept card proxies for casual play, never proxies of ships or bases.

Whatever...

As long as anyone involved is ok with it, proxying is fine. This shouldn't be a problem to anyone (outside of tournaments) when talking about upgrade cards.

Actually I don't use my pilot or upgrade cards much anymore - it's much easier to use printed squads. It also helps with setup and cleanup and you don't have to buy three Great Cosmic Albino Bisons just for the AS upgrades!

It also helps a bunch when you play with friends who're new to the game and would otherwise take an hour to check everything and build a squad :)

TBH I'm tempted to write a small App, and then just use my Tablet as my Pilot card and Upgrade cards, It saves so much time between matches....

I feel they are "OK" only if you are are unable to obtain the REAL ones due to availability issues.. other than that seems like its being "CHEAP" but for house/local use i wouldn't have any problems with it, seems like we ought to be supporting FFG and our local game stores.. If and when we can.. just my 2 cents... oh and i wouldn't accept ship proxys... thats just lame....

If the bases were correct would you mind people using a Shapeways YT-2000 or YT-2400 to represent a YT-1300... or some Tie-Droids to represent some Tie Fighters... To me that would be fun and cool.

Or even a Hound's Tooth and a IG-2000, to represent a couple of Firesprays.
