Suggestions for Beyond the Rim

By Kshatriya, in Game Masters

Hi all,

I plan to start running an Age of Rebellion game. I understand this isn't the AoR forum, but they don't have a GM subforum yet, so I figured I would post it here as it relates to an EotE module.

I have been thinking about how to start my AoR game and considered beginning with Beyond the Rim. I figure the PCs would be relatively-new Rebel agents and the Rebellion can't afford to ignore rumors of a treasure ship discovery, being strapped for cash. It won't cost much to divert a nearby Rebel cell to test the waters, at any rate, and the Wheel provides a location for alien Rebel members to help out without standing out overly much. References to the PCs' starship can easily be adjusted to be the PCs' Lambda-class shuttle or star fighters, as needed.

I'm trying to think of other ways to convert the in-game motivations from Edge to Age of Rebellion. For example, maybe another Rodian clan will provide support to the Rebellion once they learned that Rebel agents did such a number on the Yiyar, and that itself could have repercussions inside the Rebellion for going beyond the missions scope. IsoTech could become supportive of the Rebellion, which could have great effects once they get back into business.

Any other suggestions for changes y'all would make? Or reasons why you think this isn't as great an idea as I'm thinking?

I think the story is general enough it wont matter that your a rebel or not. I ran though it with edge and the main trouble i saw was linking the preexisting obligations with the book ones. I recommend just ditching the ones in the book and looking at your PC modivations and obligations (im assuming age of rebellion still has those) and writing your own links. just read through the complete Beyond the Rim before doing it.

I think that Beyond the Rim will work better for agents of the Rebellion than for independents.

if you are planning on running using AoR instead of EotE, i wouldn't start the adventure with the intent to try to later connect it to the rebellion/bigger picture/larger factions. i would be tempted to work that into the backstory and character history from the get go. i always prefer starting "in the the thick of it" rather than working up to it, partly because sometimes things take way longer than expected in game.

I agree with working in the RA from the start. Since the RA is always hurting for money (to buy ships from the CSA, infor from the Bothans, favors from the Hutts, etc.), the allure of a treasure ship is obvious.

Funny you should mention the PCs' Lambda Class shuttle. That is exactly what my EotE crew are flying, having stolen it from Mos Shuuta.

I think Beyond the Rim would make an excellent starting mission for a Rebel cell. The lure of treasure ship is obvious, the Wheel is the sort of place where anyone could plausibly pass through. Your idea of possible support from a Rhodian clan is a good way to have a little more riding on the outcome.
