Captain Harsol R.I.P.

By DanteRotterdam, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So today we finished chapter 2 of Beyond the Rim in a way I thought would never happen… First of all the encounter with the Yiyar clan turned out to go massively into the outfield when my party rapidly boarded their freighter and tried to outrun their assailants through the treetops but eventually got the upper hand in a dogfight over the jungle forcing the attacking clan to yield and land their ship near the Sa Nalaor again. I have to stay that this was amazing they completely took me by surprise but it worked out so awesomely with everyone on board pitching in and pulling tricks on the opponents vessel. It was unbelievably cool!

The rest of the adventure went really well and the party convinced both Cratala and Harsol that they should join them to Raxus Prime however during Harsol’s complete freak out at the Empire’s arrival my players tried to talk him down and have him put down the gun that he was pointing at them. Our politician tried to persuade him and rolled a succes, 3 threat and a despair. I told him „Harsol isn’t going to shoot you, but…” at which point the player who played the politician said „Oh my god, he is going to shoot himself isn’t he?” Even though I wasn’t planning to do so I figured it was his roll, (somewhat) his suggestion and very fitting and in keeping with the paranoid behavior Harsol had displayed before.

Harsol turned his blaster around and shot himself in his temple with his blaster.

It was such an awesome moment in the game and such fun to have my player (involuntarily) come up with it in such a way… It is probably one of the most amazing moments I have experienced in a game ever.

The lesson for me is to let the players be creative and react to the dice, this time it worked out so well!!!

You know what? Everyone's version of this adventure sounds completely different. That is so cool. Everyone also has a completely different high point to the story. My players trashed most of the Yiyar on the Wheel so I went for a double helping of Imperials.

I think both of these posts attest to the basic beauty of this narrative system.

Sorry to hear about the 'ol Cap. So far, a little into act III my Harsol is still kicking. My group was actually able to make peace with the Yiyar clan and with the refugees, saving about almost all of them. The Yiyar's helped fight the Imps. (I did throw an Imperial Inquisitor to mess with my Force Emergent a little) So my group, and the clan were able to make it off the planet without to many causalities. We did loose one character though, but he had chances to escape, but choose to be dumb...

It is amazing how this adventure can turn out so different for everyone!! Thanks Sterling and FFG!!

Have not started BtR officially yet, although I have had the players on the Wheel and had a run-in with Yiyar and Reom already, to kinda make it a cooler story when they get the call from Reom in the future.

My one group ended up figuring out that Harsol was nothing more than a despot, and left him stranded on Cholganna, while taking Cratala and running for it. Breaking all the deals they'd made in the process - so now they're being hunted down by IsoTech, Imps, Harsol, Yiyar.

Now they're on their way to try and convince Jabba to offer them protection.

That's pretty awesome. And also works out for the players as they can now steal his money :)

Haven't done this one yet, but I think he will be too sympathetic a figure for them to just kill, but too unstable to really befriend. I can see him doing something like this, it feels very dramatic.

My harsol died by having a complete mental breakdown and pulled out a dead mans switch to blow up the compound when the imps arrived. He was talked down to a completely catatonic state while the imps assaulted the retreat. Cratala was forcibly detained and acquired and it-3po is slowly proving to be more resorceful and more independant of a droid. He may end up having a coup of isotech in the future.

The party did not get any money and as they escsped they released the deadman switch to blow the retreat.

My party is very.. let's say, just out for themselves. They also sufferred from a string of failed rolls and several despairs. (But lots of triumphs with no success)

Well, our bountyhunter got very upset by everything that happened with Harsol and the cyber Nexu running off into the jungle so she immediately fired upon the imperial agent when he called out the names of the party members... He is now dead in the road.

I think the next adventure (after concluding Beyond the Rim) will see them having to make ammends with the Empire. They are lucky the agent was acting as somewhat of a free agent but they will have a debt with the authorities now.

I think they will be called upon to scout a certain moon of Endor for a suitable location for an imperial base in the near future!

One of the golden moments of the Empire attacking the survivors camp was when our politician ran into the Nexu cages to hide. INTO THE NEXU CAGES. He then gets the bright idea of releasing the Nexu and sicking them onto the Scout Bikers. One nexu circles around a bit and decides that it is still weary from a recent surgery. The other leaps out, growls a bit and then just runs into the jungle.
The politician's face was just priceless. So after that he decided to convince Cratala to help him break into Capt. Harsol's safe and steal whatever is inside.

Now the politician only has one arm. So watching him trying to find a way to steal all of the precious metals was very entertaining.

Speaking of treasure, has anyone had a group attempt to steal the riches from the downed Separatist's ship? What were the rewards? It leaves it up the GM, but I'm not sure what is too much, and what is too little.

Nope. When my group fled from Cholganna, the Imperials had control of the site and had captured Harsol. The PCs felt it was best to leave and never go back. If they do, they'll find an Imperial dig underway, and it'll be well defended.

Please stay out of my topics or remove my name from your signature.

Our Harsol ran up on the group as we were trying to coax Cratala out from hiding in the Nexu cage when the imperials arrived, yelling threats and waiving his blaster. Not the thing to do to a party containing both a scout and bounty hunter with Quick Strike in a mounting combat situation.

HapoyDaze...maybe you should kiss and make up with DanteRotterdam?

What happened last year stays in last year.

I usually clear out my Ignore List every three months +/- some. Is there any particular reason why I should do so prematurely for him?

Since you can't seem to read his post.... He's a little upset that you are posting in his thread even though you are ignoring him.

So smooch smoochy.... And get over it.

FFG owns all of the threads, so it's not really something any one poster can claim ownership over even if he/she makes the initial post. I respond to posts as I see fit.

Hahahaha, it just got even sadder. "Ownership"? You must be the saddest person on these boards...

And @UHF, I don't mind him posting in my topics or him ignoring me. No problem at all. It is just that he seems to find it necessary to have my name in each and every of his posts propagating to everyone that I am on ignore but still participates in discussions I have started. It is just bizarre... Also, I am not upset, far from it.

The Dark Side is strong with you two....

Can't we all just get along? :(

C'mon guys, you're both good posters. We're better than this.

I don't have a problem with UHF. I apologize if I gave the impression that we can't get along.

I have been very clear. I don't mind being ignored by kids like happydaze (he never puts forth anything bit negativity anyway) but it seems he feels that he can be a part of discussions I start but still wear my name in his signature like a badge of honor and that riles me up. The whole "ffg owns the board" schpiel is just a petulant child wanting his cake and eating it too. Just sad.

I wonder how many times I still need to report him before he gets his first warning.

I think you can attest to he fact that I am a positive person on these boards and that "the dark side" is very far removed from me.
