Starting Squads?

By Theroleplayer, in X-Wing

HI I've just recently aquired the core set and an A-wing, but i just want more! :D

I want to create a 100 point squad for the rebels and a 100 point squad for the Empire.

But i don't know which ships i should buy. I want them both to be kinda fair to each other with neither having a great advantage over the other, because i need to have a lend-out squad (Is this making any sense? :P )

So help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance! :)

4 shuttles..

no well for rebels a b-wing and y-wing would be cool

and for imperials.. tie fighters and lots of them

My simple advice is to go for ship you really enjoy. Most SW fans probably have some ships they prefer.

My favorite ship is the Tie Interceptor, so most of my squads feature these.

Thanks for the responses. :)

This is good advice, buy what you like and have fun.

The fastest way to a 100 point Rebel squad is simply to add a Falcon. Although there are many variations on it one of the named YT-1300s and and two Rebel Fighters can make a competitive 100 point squad.

Making a "good" 100 point Imperial squadron is going to take a bit more work because even at the most expensive end two TIE Fighters just aren't that many points and upgrades on them are often a poor idea. I'd say the fastest way to a 100 point Imperial squad would be get another Core Set (which also gives you another X-Wing plut more dice and a second set of templates) and the Firespray/Slave 1. When it comes out I guess Imperial Aces and the Firespray may also work but TIE Fighters are the most fun when they are run in numbers.

I'll mention that the Falcon and Firespray both include modification cards which can be used on any ship which makes them a bit more useful than a single fighter would be.

ive been playing since the games release - i made a lucky guess and bought 2x core sets right (2 sets of templates, more dice) away because like u i wasnt satisfied with playing one x-wing vs 2 tie-fighters - not even when i was learning the game!

minimum rebel ships for some options at 100pts squads

*3 x-wings (x-wing expansion has Wedge), 2 B-Wings, 1 y-wing then falcon, HWK-290 last

imperials

*5 ties (need tie-expansion and suggest 2nd core set)

1 tie advanced (optional but u get vader)

1-2 tie intercepter

1 slave1

1 shuttle

priority buys are "*"

recommend u leave the big ships till last - they give u loads more upgrades but when u r starting out this will only confuse you. stick to fighters for now. learn to walk before u can run.

FFG knew what they were doing with the order ships were released in. get familiar with tie-fighters and x-wings first b4 u go all crazy with mixing in lots of diff ship types - this will give u the basic skills u need to build on as well as teach you the strengths and weakneses of each ship.

I don't see A-wings in that list anywhere. Isn't that the only way (currently) to get Push The Limit (PTL)? I'd advise an A-wing or two before the HWK-290 just for PTL.

First off, there's not really a need to get the specific upgrade cards unless your local league doesn't allow Proxying. You won't be able to play in official tournaments without an actual copy of the card in question, though.

Secondly, PTL is getting re-released in the Imperial Aces pack. Now people never have to buy an A-Wing ever again!

...Pity, 'cause it's a fun ship to fly

  • He's already got one A-Wing so getting a 2nd is not a priority imo.
  • As DraconP has stated PTL comes with the new imperial aces expansion so one A-Wing is all he really needs unless he is a huge A-Wing fan... when u r starting out u really dont want too many multiples of ships like A-Wing's, Tie-Advanced's or even Y-Wings for that matter until u have a solid established base with a 'little of everything' - this game is such a customizable game u can go in lots of different directions once u know exactly what u like to play.
  • Actually on the topic of A-Wings its really a 'niche' ship and for this reason it wont appear in as many squads as say the X-Wing or B-Wing which are far more popular (and for good reason). For me personally - ive only ever seen a few lists that run two of them that id even play, one of these is the BBBAA rebel swarm list. Compare this to the X-Wing and B-Wing which appear in loads of competitive squads.
