New Player - Should I buy the 2nd edition upgrade

By eagletsi111, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi Everyone,

I just bought the 2nd Edition. I have no first edition at all. However, I saw the first edition converson and upgrade kit says include all characters every released, include special and unique. Is there a reason to buy this if I don't have the 1st edition?

Thanks,

If you want to add heaps of new characters or monsters, then it's a good idea. However, it does NOT include the figures, so you would either have to use random heroes/monsters from the 2nd edition to represent them, or find other proxies like from Reaper's Bones line (which ultimately can get a bit pricey). FFG is releasing the Hero and Monster Collections soon, which includes four heroes and three monsters from the conversion kit. That might be a better option as it comes with updated art and certain stats, but it isn't out yet.

Personally I would opt for buying the 3 current expansions and possibly the 4th when it is released.

I am sure you will not be missing out on much as when they developed the 2nd edition they would have included what they believed to be the best characters needed to have fun =)

I really like the conversion kit. It gives more variety in the heroes and monsters. You don't need it, but for me it really adds to the game.

Thanks. I'm really thinking about getting it. I figure I can use my Minatures from my millions of other games. I'm really wanted to make sure they work with the Second edition, even if you don't have any of the 1st edition.

Sounds to me like they do, so I guess I will have to pick it up next time I get paid.

Yes, everything you need (other than actual figures) is provided in the Conversion Kit.

The new expansions that provide new sculpts for 1E heroes and monsters also include a couple of new quests and revised character sheets, if that makes a difference to you. We don't the full extent of the changes, but we've already seen a few tweaks to hero stats and abilities, for example.

The CK is by far the cheaper option, of course.

I would say: No!

Get the expansions and if you have enough $$$ the Lieutenants.

The expansions have new heroes and new monster groups plus add new Tiles and Quests.

The Lieutenants have great sculpts, new cards for the overlord and include a new mechanic.

New sculpts and updated cards are coming for the 1 ed stuff, be patient.

The re-releases also come with new encounters of there own.

Get the expansions and if you have enough $$$ the Lieutenants.

Remember that you can only use one Lieutenant pack per campaign. All of the cards and abilities have been posted for each, so if you can decide ahead of time which you'd like to use, you can pick it up and wait on picking up the others until you're ready to start a new campaign. This doesn't necessarily save you money, but it does spread it out.
