Two Questoins: Movement and Surges

RE: Large Monster Movement

Ok so if you use two moves as your actions for a large monster, you pick one tile it stands on, shrink him down and move then pop him back up. At this point if you choose to move again, can you pick another different tile for him to shrink to and thus move him that one extra square?

ie

______ move 1

XX

X* <---Chosen square to shrink down to

v

v

X* <---Pop back up and place him covering the moved to space
XX

______ move 2

XX <---originally chosen square to move from

X* <---newly chosen square to move from (one square further)

v

v

X*
XX

RE: Surges

As an overlord can you spend two surges on the same ability when attacking a hero?

if not what can you use this spare surge for?

Thanks guys!!

Q2: You can spend one surge per one ability. If is 2 same surge ability on monster card, you can use them both if you roll two surges. If you roll 2 surges and you have only one surge ability you can use only one ability, so second surge is ignored.

Yes, you can use the shrink/expand rules to squeak out extra spaces of movement like this. Even using only one Move Action, you can do this, if you can find a convenient point to interrupt movement for a second action, and then continue moving after. However, you must be able to perform that second action from the single space the monster occupies before interruption.

Also note, you can only "interrupt" to perform another action. You can't "interrupt" every space you move just to shrink/expand differently.

RE: Surges

Surges work the same for the OL as for the heroes - each surge ability can only be used once.

If the monster making the attack only has one surge ability, then the second surge is useless.

Some monsters do have two surge abilities, though. Also, there's at least one OL card that adds "Surge: Ability" to any attack you play it on, so you could play that card on an attack and then have a second ability for the other surge.

Also note, you can only "interrupt" to perform another action. You can't "interrupt" every space you move just to shrink/expand differently.

So you can;

  • move 2 spaces
  • pop up anywhere over that one space
  • attack
  • choose a new square to shrink to
  • move another 2 spaces and pop back up over that newly chosen shrunk square

Which means that with a movement of 4 you can span 8 spaces (in ideal circumstances)?

[X X] 1 [2 X] 3 [4 X]

Correct. Provided, of course, that the monster is able to attack its target from the one space it occupied when it declared the interruption.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have a special thread for rules questions rather than go to BGG?

Cheers Steve-O! Muchly appreciated =)

Did not mean to offend Robin, I only got the game 2 weeks ago and am trying to find out the correct technicalities in the game. I always search what I am trying to find before I post and usually find what I am after but the search algorithms on this site usually pick up any and every word in any post so it does not make it too easy to wade through each topic.

Is there a special thread for rules and questions?

If so that would be amazing! =)

Greatly appreciate every bit of help I get here, I have never played anything like D+D before (except for on PC).

Thanks again : )

You haven't offended.

No offense of course.

I was simply pointing to the fact that this topic has been hashed over and over and advising to do some forum search and FAQ reading before asking a question.

It would be good if FFG created a new sub forum like they have done with the "Descent Quest Creator" for rules questions.

+1

The French (edge) forum as well as BGG already have such a feature, and it really helps.

Other FFG forums (such as the Arkham Horror one) already display a Rules folder.

Even though a special "rules questions thread" ("FFG sez") as well as a wiki on rules questions were made on BGG, would FFG create a "sticky" thread pointing towards the links of those two so usefull ressources ?

As the FFG people do read this forum and as they already have shown how much they take in account players' ideas and feedback, one can reasonally hope that a "Rules" folder will exist some day.

I will go the "extra mile" here : These are the questions about monster movement in the Wiki ( http://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Descent_Second_Edition_Unofficial_FAQ ) :

-- Large monster movement

Q: If the movement of a large monster is interrupted (e.g: with caltrops) and there is no space to "expand" it, how do you proceed?

A: You cannot interrupt large monster movement in a space in which it cannot expand.

(1) Q: How does interrupting movement to attack interact with large monster movement?

A: When moving with a large monster, you always choose 1 space it occupies to count movement. If you interrupt movement to attack, you choose any space it occupies to continue movement. This could result in additional spaces moved during the movement. (1)

(2) Q: May large monsters interrupt a move action with another action (e.g., open door, attack) after hey have shrunk to 1x1 but before they have spent a movement point so that they can expand in a direction different than their orientation before the move action? See post for description of proposed mechanic: (1)

A: Allowed! (1)

Q: How to treat large monsters, when reduced to 1x1 during their movement - especially in context of pit spaces: If a “shrunken” large monster enters a pit space, does it suffer 2 damage and ends its movement or is it totally immune to the pit spaces while moving?

A: As written, a large monster whose movement is in process is not affected by pit spaces and can move through them as normal. (1)

The "(1)" marks are links to the "FFG sez thread" that I initiated on BGG forums.

Now here are the references to large monster movement in the last version of the FAQ - downloadable in the support section of the FFG page of Descent, here http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/descent-second-ed/support/faq/Descent%20Second%20Edition%20FAQ_v1.2.pdf :

p.1

Page 16, “Large Monsters”: Add, “When interrupting a large monster’s movement to perform an action, the overlord must be able to declare the action that the large monster will perform before placing the monster’s figure on the map.”

p. 3

Q: Does a large monster suffer damage when “expanding” into spaces containing lava?

A: No. A figure only suffers damage when entering a space containing

lava. When ending its movement, the large monster is only considered to

have entered the one space in which it ended its movement.

p. 4

Q: When a large monster interrupts its movement to perform an action, does the figure have to be placed on the map in all empty spaces?

A: Yes, a large monster cannot interrupt its movement unless it can be placed on the map and all the spaces it occupies are empty spaces.
