Visual Dictionary

Is the Visual Dictionary worth purchasing to use with this game?

I like to sketch up characters and maps and I thought maybe the book would be a big help with that. Also seems useful in pointing out things at the table.

However, it's listed as a "Childrens" book on Amazon, and with Wookieepedia and other online resources I wondered if its worth the price.

As a side note, I just picked up a used copy of Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy (IV,V,VI) and it's pretty awesome for some insta maps for EotE.

I have them ALL, the visual dictionaries, essential guides to ships and vehicles, and the locations books. Throw in the essential atlas. I think the only "big book" of Star Wars I don't have is the creature book. So my answer is obviously yes. :)

They aren't childrens' books unless you consider anything Star Wars to be for children. If you are a fan, you will like browsing them for the pictures and textual details. You probably want to pick any such books up used, they will be pricey new in a store. Each of the three series I mentioned comes with seperate books or you can get each set in one larger book. Some of the collection books also throw in some new material that isn't available in the individual books.

Thanks for the reply!

I have the Essential Atlas, and it's awesome as well.

I'll probably just go ahead and order the Complete Visual Dictionary from Amazon then, since you have put my "children's books" fears to rest.

Which of the books would you recommend highest in terms of usefulness to GM'ing FFG's Star Wars games?

I have the alien species guide....I like it a lot.

I suppose it depends. I had a d20 campaign that did lots on Tatooine. The location book with the maps of Tatooine, Mos Eisley, and the Cantina were used.

The Atlas is great, but you can probably find the same information on planets using Wookiepedia.

I've also referenced capital ship maps during play.

I can't say I've used the enyclopedias much. They could be used to show what certain gear looks like, but the same can be done easily with a Google search.

If I lost my set and had to start again with an RPG campaign in mind, I would probably buy in order: Locations, Atlas, Vehicles.

While we are speaking of useful EotE books, I recommend SCOUNDRELS, which could be "EotE the novel."

Sturn, would you say the visual dictionary is useful at all?

I love them for general browsing and reading, but for use in an RPG I can't recall using one of them. I might have opened one for research, but it seems Wookiepeedia has them beat for ease of finding something and a ton of more material.

Thanks Sturn! I'll save my money on the Visual Dictionary then. :)
