OT: Star Citizen

By WonderWAAAGH, in X-Wing

I hadn't heard anything about this game until just a few weeks ago, so maybe you guys haven't heard of it yet either. It's being made by the same guy who did Wing Commander and it's successors, and, thanks to the miracle of crowd funding, already has $37,000,000 in backing. That's right, thirty-seven million dollars.

So, why should you care? Well, it has the potential to be everything that Star Wars: The Old Republic wanted (and failed) to be, and both the funding and the pedigree to pull it off. I think it's especially relevant because there will be true space combat and exploration, features that BioWare promised and failed to deliver. Whether you've been itching since the '90s for a good dogfight in outer space, or you just want to smuggle elicit goods from system to system, this might be right up your alley.

There's room enough for one or two more in my Cutlass, for anyone brave enough to pirate the stars with me.

I'm a Golden Ticket holder. I backed Star Citizen during its original crowdfunding campaign in 2012.

Coincidentally, right now, I'm wearing a Squadron 42 T-shirt that I pledged for.

It will be an amazing game.

This has been going on for a good, long while now. It is outrageous expensive, imo, but if you have the money to spare I am sure it is a safe bet. Everything you can buy in the game right now will be 100% free given time and grinding once the game is released.

It certainly looks like it. Roberts has a good head on his shoulders, and I really like his vision for the game.

Also, I'm already jelly of your LTI. I can't say for certain that I would have backed this game in 2012, but I do very much regret not hearing about it sooner.

Without a doubt. I don't imagine the larger ships will be prohibitively expensive (in game currency) once SC goes live, but it won't be a cake walk either. I wonder if current real money prices are reflective only of the funding process, or if they'll remain that high after launch.

If anyone else has already pledged, feel free to share what ships you have or what sort of profession you'll be aiming for.

I've got the 300i ship and will probably be an escort or something, I don't know yet.

The released Hangar module is pretty cool, makes me yearn for a full scale Millennium Falcon.

I am tentatively hopeful on this one. I know a lot of guys in my MWO group who have bought in so I plan to benefit from then when I can get in for free. For the moment, X-wing gets my free cash budget.

If you've bought anything in MWO with real money, you can probably handle an RSI pledge. I'm still not sure if I regret my Boarshead or not...

Sure, I could probably find the money, but that would be one less ship. I'm hopeful that SC will be more than vaporware, I'll spend money when I've had a chance to play and am sure I will like the money I spend.

At the moment EVE has pretty well burned me out on space. The little itch left can be scratched by STO or TOR, both let me keep my toys for free.

It would be a really neat trick to turn $37,000,000 into vaporware.

There really is no good MMO to play at the moment, I'll give you that. Hopefully ESO lives up to its potential, that way I have some form of digitical crack to pass the time with until SC goes live.

It's good that you found it eventually! LTI won't be the hugest deal considering it only covers hulls, not upgrades or cargo, but it's a nice way to pay us back for taking our money more than two years before release =P

I have a Hornet F7C (I prefer its all-aroundness to the various upgraded Hornets), an Aurora LX (I think it's a better ship than the LN) and the Avenger. I got the Colonel package with all the physical rewards, which I wanted so I can feel like I'm getting something for all the money I've spent besides just a game. I also figured from early on that if this was going to be a special game, it would be really great to have some commemorative items for it.

I like the hangar module, it's fun playing around in my ships (and with the new gun platform, now). I'm miffed that they delayed the dogfighting module by several months , though, and I'm disinclined to pledge any more until it releases. A big reason I added on the Aurora and Avenger was so that I'd have more than one option to fly in the dogfighting module, which I figured would be the only thing I'd have to play for more than half a year while waiting for the Squadron 42 alpha. That investment loses its value with each month the dogfighting module is delayed, though. =\ It's probably for the best for the game in the end, but it's still disappointing to me personally.

I can't wait either. Got the 300i as well.

I'm hoping to mod my Cutlass out like the Slave 1.

This looks awesome, but I couldn't find anything on it about system requirements, OS versions or anything like that. I guess they may not know just yet...

It's running on the Crysis engine, I believe. It looks pretty sharp to my eyes, and I'm running it on medium. When I cranked it up to high, the frame rate dropped considerably. For reference, I built this computer over three years ago.

Here are the specs for the Hangar module:

Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
DirectX 11 graphics card with 1GB Video RAM
Quad core CPU
8GB RAM

There's actually a lot of information floating around the forums. The developer is very interactive with the community, which is a nice change of pace from the likes of, say, Blizzard, where years go by while you're left in the dark.

Yeah, the system requirements aren't nailed down yet because the game's still being made. The hangar module has higher minimum requirements than the final game probably will because they've optimized nothing yet.

People have actually found ways of getting DirectX 10 cards to run the hangar. And it runs on 4 GB of RAM. A decent CPU is kinda necessary, though.

As I said above, I have a Hornet, Aurora and Avenger in my hangar. It's the Business Hangar. My computer has:

AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB GHZ Edition 1050mhz (Sapphire Dual-X)
Intel i5-760 quad-core 2.8ghz
8GB of 1333 DDR3 (Corsair XMS3)
I forget which motherboard. I know it's an ASUS LGA 1156, dual-channel memory, PCI-e 2.0.

Nothing is overclocked.

When I stand back and look at the whole hangar on 1080p with high settings, I get 12 frames per second. On 1080p with low settings (which still look very good — there's little visual difference right now), I get 38 frames per second. On 720p with high settings, I get 16 frames per second, and on 720p with low settings, I hit 60 frames per second (which seems to be a cap, because no matter what I did on 720p with low settings, it never went higher or lower than 60 FPS).

When I walked right up to my Avenger so that it filled my view, I got 25 FPS on 1080p high, 47 FPS on 1080p low, 43 FPS on 720p high, and 60 FPS on 720p low.

So hopefully that gives you an idea of what computer is needed.

Have they kept the non-MMO mode they promised early on? I'm happy to play the game, just not as an MMO.

I remember reading at the start they would release the server code so you could run your own server if you wanted. Do that and I'll help build a mod environment for the SW universe!
