link v trace help

By themcradical1, in Android: Netrunner Rules Questions

Im rather new so excuse me if this is a silly question.

i was playing nbn and they played midseason replacements, my question is when a card says something like ammount in which trace exceeds link, is that your original link strength vs the cards trace strength. or whatever they are after you do the bidding. my link began at 4 and the card has trace 6 but he out bid me bad. Im not sure if we played it right but i ened up taking like 11 tags and getting wreaked. please help, thnx.

If the Corp played Midseason Replacements and paid 0 additional credits, then the trace strength is 6. If the Corp paid an additional 2 credits, then the trace strength is 8, etc. Let's continue with this latter example, where the Corp has a trace strength of 8...

...now it's time for the Runner's response...

Let's assume that the Runner has 1 Link; the Runner would need to pay 7 credits to match the trace strength and thus break the trace. If the Runner paid 0 credits then he/she would receive 7 tags (8 trace vs. 1 link). If the Runner paid 3 credits, then the Runner has temporarily increased his/her link strength and thus would receive only 4 tags (8 trace vs. 4 link).

Hope that helps.

...and, of course...welcome to the game!

thank you for the speedy response. you guys are the best. cheers.

Overloading the Runner with tags is a great way to get a Psychographics + Project Beale win. I've used it many times myself:

Click #1: Play Midseason Replacements and make sure that the Runner ends up with at least 13 tags.

Click #2: Install a Project Beale in any remote server (even a new, unprotected one).

Click #3: Play Psychographics with 13 credits and score Project Beale for 7 points in one turn.

Game over!

The only caveat is that you need to store up a lot of credits to do this, so make sure that your deck has a very strong economy.

I like to use the NBN identity "The World Is Yours" so that I can have a smaller deck and I can have more cards in my hand. This increases the chances of drawing my economy cards as well as my Midseasons, Psychos, and Beales. Throw in some cards that do meat damage (Scorched Earth, Private Security Force, Punitive Counterstrike, etc.) to make the Runner more hesitant about making aggressive runs. Plus, I use only 1- and 2-point agendas so that the Runner must steal a minimum of 4 agendas to win.

This way you can either play the Project Beale strategy or you can play a "tag & bag" strategy.

If you're going for the Midseason+Psycho+Beale win, then you also don't have to rely very heavily on your ICE...

Me: "Oh, you want to steal one of my agendas? Okay, here you go...WHAM! I win."

Runner: ? :o ?

The other important caveat is that the runner has to let you draw and keep your Project Beale.

Yep. No strategy is perfect, which is why I leave myself the tag & bag strategy to fall back on if Beale falls through.

"Oh, you stole my Project Beale? Okay...#1 Midseason or Sea Source...#2 Scorched Earth...#3 Scorched Earth...I still win."

! :o !

How do you make sure that you have those combos? Easy...Jackson Howard, baby!!

Yikes this strategy requires you to have at least 20 credits vs a link 0 completely broke runner (so 20 credits is the best case scenario). Doesn't sound like you can pull this off too often?

Nah. It's easier than it sounds. I do it all the time.

Throw down a Melange protected by a Data Raven in front of a Muckraker, and that'll really get your economy rolling. The Runner spends a lot of effort getting rid of the Melange. Then I throw down another one. They trash that one, and I can use Action Jackson to get them back in my deck if I want to.

In fact, I'm starting to get bored with my NBN deck because it wins so often. I've even lost against it myself when I let others use the deck. If the runner gets too aggressive, then BAM!
