Remaking a name pilot : If you could change two pilots abilities... who? what?

By The_Brown_Bomber, in X-Wing

If you could change TWO named pilots abilities, which pilots would you choose and what would the new abilities be?

Choose ONE imperial and ONE rebel named pilot and change his ability. The new pilot should be balanced and reflect the original squad point cost.

Fel's Wrath: When he dies he deals 1 face up damage card to all ships within range 1... MUHUHAHAHAHA!

Arvel: He can move at PS 1 and shoot at PS 6.

He picked the two I was going to use. Cant really beat his ideas. This is pretty hard since a lot of named pilots save the two mentioned above have abilities that match the pilots. So I am stumped. I may think of a couple later.

Boba Fett - Most iconic of all second tier Star Wars characters and the highest skill pilot of one of the best ships in the game. And his ability is pretty lame. I usually know if I want to turn left or right.

compare his ability to some other top skill abilites from Wedge, Vader, Howelrunner, Soonter Fell, Han Solo, Tycho.

Boba Fett is just about the meanest character in the Star Wars pantheon, doesn't he deserve a mean ability.

Maarek Steele - Immediately after rolling your attack dice you may change all 'hits' to 'criticals'.

Luke Skywalker - You may assign up to two elite pilot talents to your ship.

Ok, how about this.

Maarek Steele has a neat ability, but it's wasted on the TIE Advanced. How about this one:

Your uncancelled crit results bypass shields.

Horton Salm: When firing torpedos, do not discard the card.

Sable: Instead of not discarding the card why not use the Attack Wing mechanic of disabling (tap the card sideways) when the torpedo is fired. Then as an action he can "reload" and have it available again.

This probably would be an awesome modification for missiles and torpedoes for anyone.

Bomber: Yes I think a pilot with 2 EPTs could work especialy those that are "force attuned". So that could include Vader as wel!

i agree Luke's force abilities are somewhat overlooked at this time - but who knows what FFG have planned!

im soo looking fwd to the 4 new x-wing pilots in the rebel transport expansion.

imho rebels need a boost for 100pt play - separate from epic format rules... maybe a Red Squadron title card or X-Wing specific title. I can see that the B-Wing is having its time in the limelight now. X-Wings will always see play - they r in the core set after all but when given a choice would u rather play a B-Wing or X-Wing non named pilot right now?

As for name X-Wing pilots Biggs is the undisputed king imo - for 25pts u get a damage sink that shoots back. He is mor skill intensive to play than many give him credit for tho.

I've long thought Boba's ability should have been:

"When attacking, if the defender has a Unique Pilot or Upgrade card, you may reroll 1 die."

That would fit with his bounty hunting credentials, without being too broken, IMO.

I think Luke's ability is actually one of the best in the game. It allows him to focus his attention on more offensive based actions, ie Marksmanship. Also Horton has a good ability. patience is required as we wait for a variety of torps to come out.

I would change Steele: when you deal critical damage regenerate one shield.

I'm on the fence about this.

Arvel: you may take actions even if you bump

Or when you bump an enemy ship roll an attack dice. Enemy ship sufferes the result.

This could be broken the more I think about it. Maybe suffer a damage to deal a damage when you bump.

Arvel- you may attack and take actions when touching another ship. When you measure a boost action and it overlaps you may choose to overlap.

Fett- when you attack a ship you have target locked, roll one more attack die. When another ship has you target locked you may reroll 1 defense die.

Runners up- Mauler Mithal (too close to backstabber), Steele, Fel's Wrath.

Arvel needs that change sooooo badly.

A lot of ideas for fett and Steele are really strong too.

As the brown bomber was talking about, red squad definitely needs the ept. My group has been allowing that. Also with tempest squad (that's the ps 4 advanced, right?) because they're supposed to be some of the best non unique pilots.

I hope we see a rogue squadron pack the rebels soon...

Maarek Steele - Immediately after rolling your attack dice you may change all 'hits' to 'criticals'.

Luke Skywalker - You may assign up to two elite pilot talents to your ship.

id like to see luke renamed as "Jedi Luke Skywalker" or "Luke Jedi Master". I like the current Luke but would like the option of playing a new Luke :)

Boba Fett, to reflect his extensive modifications - "If you took the Focus action, gain +1 agility until end of turn" (he might need to be upcosted 1-2 more points too, then)

Lando, his current ability feels more like a crew card-type ability, so to give homage to his skill at getting lucky long range hits - "When firing with your primary weapon, opponents in your front firing arc do not get a bonus to agility due to asteroids or being at range 3"

Arvel - Give him an EPT and maybe give him an inbuilt Anti Pursuit Laser ability. If he hits you roll a dice. On a hit your opponent takes damage, and to balance it Arvel can too.

Maarek - Just to play around with the Crit ability, just give him some of the inbuilt proton torpedo text, like switch a focus to a Crit.

Garven Dreis - After spending a focus token or target lock, you may place 1 focus token on any other friendly ship at Range 1-2 (once per round).

Gives Garven better synergy with his personal R-Unit (R5-K6). The "once per round" to limit chain-focusing.

Boba Fett - When Attacking in the Auxiliary Arc. All Secondary Weapons become "Attack [Target Lock]: Spend Target Lock to perform attack"

Arvel - At the start of the Activation Phase, choose to activate Arvel at PS 2, 4, or 6. Arvel is PS6 during the Combat Phase. (insert current Arvel text after this text)

Fel's Wrath - When damage = hull, Fel makes one final attack that cannot be defended against. Remove Fel from the board immediately after this attack.

Allows Arvel to choose depending on the PS of your opponents.

Allows Fel an undefended attack which sort-of alters the simultaneous fire rule for him. Since it only works when he dies, not too bad i suppose.

What about: Fett - if you do hull damage to an enemy ship, ignore any special rules for that unique pilot (I don't really like the wording, but he basically turns off unique pilots special abilities if he can do a point of hull. Yes it would be a nasty ability, but he is the top skilled pilot for his ship. Compared to Wedge's Vader's or even Fell's I think it is about on par.

May be alone on this one, but Han Solo, he should be able to choose which dice to re-roll - so basically a target lock ability. For that many points, he should be able to do something more useful.

don't tell him "the odds"....

Like many others here, I would change Arvel and Fel's Wrath.

Arvel is very simple. Just make him PS 0 and be done with it. He would have an interesting and unique niche as the world's best blocker, offset by firing last. This makes him interesting and useful, without making him as ridiculously powerful as he would be if he moved and fired at different times.

Fel's Wrath - If you have not yet attacked when an opponent attacks you, you may choose to resolve your attack immediately (opponent must be in arc/etc). Resolve your attack first and apply all effects. The opponent then resolves their attack. You roll zero defense dice against that attack.

I am sure there is a much more elegant way of wording Fel's Wrath so that it would fit better on the card. But this would make him dangerous, but in a very high-risk high-reward kind of way.

These r the pilots people have said theyd like to change so far...

Bobba Fett x2

Fel's Wrath x3

Arvel x4

Han Solo x1

Maarek Steel x2

Luke x1

Horton x1

Kath Scarlett.
When attacking, you may change one Hit result to a Blank. If you do, the defender receives a Stress Token.

Boba Fett

Whenever you reveal a Turn or a Bank maneuver, you may rotate your dial to any other Turn or Bank maneuver with the same bearing.

Captain Kagi
Enemy ships at Range 1-2 cannot acquire Target Locks, and cannot spend Target Lock tokens.

What I REALLY want to do is alter the Upgrades, though.

So what cards would you create to help pilots with ability issues?

For a-wings I'd create "green leader" title, a-wing only. Whenever a green squadron a wing attacks a ship in your arc, it gains a focus token.

For arvel, I'd create the following modification, "Knife's edge" a-wing only. Your boost movement is treated as a white maneuver, you deal one damage to ships you overlap. If you deal damage this way, suffer one damage.
