Dice.......

By sguziec, in Game Masters

New to the FFG system but long time GM.

Few things

First - How "random" is the dice app?

Two - Does having the app take away from the RPG exp?

Third - Are there any "custom" FFG dice? In the past my players have bought their own dice for all the d20 systems I GMed. Most of the guys would buy a new set for each new adventure to match their characters....However I can't find any dice other than the stock FFG ones.

First - the simple tests I've seen done first-hand about the actual randomization seem a little off. We couldn't pinpoint what it was exactly, but the results on the app and the results on the dice just didn't seem to match up (though, it could just be bad luck like what could happen when checking two sets of dice and getting poor comparisons... or it could be a bad test)

Two - it's purely user preference. Part of why I (and my players) like this game is the fist-full of dice you seem to throw every action. I love holding 6-12 dice at a time and letting them all fly; my players love seeing the explosion of their rolls and finding the totals themselves. Other people I've played with (the first group I was in to test this game out) prefer the speed and simplicity of an app (not to mention the money-saving factor). Now that I'm a GM, I'm using the app for all the NPC rolls - it speeds it up (I don't need to collect my dice - which the players use) and it adds to the suspence (the players don't see my rolls, they don't know just how good or bad the NPCs are doing)

Third - No. As far as I've been able to find, it's all just the stock FFG custom EotE dice. However, the Core Rule Book and mini rule book (included with the beginner game) have a chart to convert standard dice to the game. If they like their personal dice, they can still roll their personal d6, 8, 12 and then use the conversion chart (you just need to be able to distinguish the "positive" dice -green/yellow/blue- from the "negative" dice -purple/red/black-).

I had thought about getting the dice app for my iPad, but it turns out with my two sets of dice, and two of the other players each owning a set, we have more than enough to share. So I don't think I will be getting it here soon.

i can't say that it does, but I do love rolling the dice. I have dice apps before for D20 and D6, and always went right back to my "analog" dice :D

Just something about the sound of then hitting and rolling across the table and everyone looking in anticipation at that dreaded red die!!! If I was in a skype game, digital dice, if I'm in a physical game, physical dice. Also, everyone can easily see the dice, not everyone can see the phone/tablet screen very well. I won't leave my electronics in the middle of my table, a drink would get spilled on it :(

Trinity is 100% correct, only FFg makes the dice and only one set so far.

That was the biggest complaint I heard about EotE from people "Ohh you have to buy special dice...wwwaaa, my 6 milion dice i already have won't work for it, they are just trying to get people to buy their dice..."

Like you don't buy dice for about every game you in are in anyway???...Your fist pound of dice wasn't enough, had to get the 5 pound bag too???

I love my FFG EotE dice sets!

Keep 'em rolling.

Your first question is a little strange. How random is it? Well, it's pseudo-random. Computers can't really be random by definition. Android's Random library probably isn't suitable for anything requiring very unpredictable results (like cryptography), but for rolling dice for your Star Wars game it should be fine. The only possible concern would be if the developer used a constant seed, but I'm willing to bet this isn't the case (if it were the results of a roll would be the same each time you launched the app and people would be talking about it).

My group only has one set of dice for 5 players + me, the GM, so the app is pretty much required to have a full dice pool. I don't find it detracts from anything. If anything it's a good thing - passing the one force die around would take a while, but with the app I can roll 5 all at once and get it out of the way. It's also good for rolls involving multiple challenge dice because for some reason FFG only packages one of those with the dice.

I use the app exclusively, playing or GMing. I'm a big fan of anything that expedites the mechanical aspects of any TTRPG.

The app is intuitive (unless I assembled the pool wrong, then it's less intuitive to adjust the dice afterwords).

My favorite part is that the bottom of the screen gives you your sort of "final total". It tells you what's left after you failures and successes, etc.

As far as "randomness" goes, fault computerized random-number generation if you will, but whether it's "fair" or "accurate" has proven to be irrelevant, and I've never felt that something was "off" with any of my rollls.

It's hard to say, "I suceed more than I fail" and blame that on the randomness of the app, when it could just be that I'm typically rolling against things that I have built my character to excel at.

Nothing about the number generation of the app makes me feel like I would have gotten a different result with actual dice. The result would be different sure, but I blame that on the nature of a dice game.

This sold me on getting the app... having the totals for the NPCs will totally help. Thanks. I'll let the the players use the dice and I'll use the APP

The app is OK if your in a pinch but determining what the dice results are is part of the fun for us. I find using the app takes away from the suspense and therefore loses that organic feeling.

As GM i dont roll for anything, i have the players roll for EVERYTHING, even for NPC's. This helps keep the players engaged and provides some good humour when a players rolls for an NPC that successfully opposes another player.

I use the dice app in the game I play in. The rest of the players and the DM use the FFG dice. I've not noticed any difference between my results on the app and their rolling, except I don't have to worry about rolling them off the table. When the dice pool gets larger than the amount of dice the DM owns the rest of the group falls back to my app. Maximum amount of dice is 20. So you can create some really massive pools.

The total read out makes the action move along and I spend more time thinking of ways to use my advantage or triumphs rather than counting and cancelling all the dice.

Update. I bought a second pack for the players and I have the app for those secret rolls. I have been having the players roll all the dice even the NPCs (thank you Order 66 for that one) and it makes the game so much more Narrative and faster play.

What I'd like to see would be some different colored dice released for each new CRB. That would be awesome.

I would love this, but the dice images/fonts in the books are colored a specific way as a reference.

It'd be interesting if they did speckled or swirled ones where the main color stayed consistent between the dice. This could add a little bit of the "my dice" feel that some people like.

I lost one of my purple Difficulty dice.

Now I have only 11 of them!

An uneven number!

If only I could buy one single Difficulty die ...

In my group, we all use the dice app, or the hangout app. I really thought I wouldn't like not having real dice, but it turns out I love using the app. That being said....if FFG made some special precision edge dice that had specks, or marks, or were just different and "precious", I would be all over them....Wouldn't use em probably, but I would own em lol.

My name is Chris, and I compulsively collect dice. :(

Hi Chris, thanks for sharing......

As a GM i use the app. Especially useful with space combat when you have to constantly add boost or setback dice. When you start getting into the "Fistfull of dice" i like it a lot. I just wish it did the canceling for you.

I have two sets of dice and that seems enough that one of my players doesn't even bother using his own

There's a setting in the app to auto-cancel, you have to turn it on manually.
