How about a 1:72 scale game?

By Millennium Falsehood, in X-Wing

So I've had this crazy notion stuck in the back of my mind for the longest time.

I build models, as some of you are aware, and one of my favorite model kits to build is the Finemolds X-wing. It's small, but accurate, and looks great when it's finished. I've built two of them, and will be building a third as soon as I get my next paycheck.

Hmmm . . . three X-wings. And the Deadly Trio is one of my favorite squads . . .

So I'm thinking about getting the X-wing, as well as some TIE Fighters and Interceptors, making scaled bases, converting the maneuver templates to a larger size, and making an enormous gaming surface to play on (like say 9'x9').

What do you think? Crazy? Or inspired? :)

Inspired. I want a 1:72 Lambda or three. :)

I think that if you have them anyway and have the room it could be fun. like playing with a giant sized chess set.

But I wouldn't pay for them for the sake of playing with them, not when I already have the 1/270 scale models.

I think it could be fun for a game night or two.. maybe to even introduce a new player to the game.. but overal a little more bulky to tote around.. if I had the models, and never traveled with them I would be tempted to do it just for the odd game now and again.. which means I need a dedicated game room.. lol.. hmmmmm maybe time to convert some space in the basement.. lol

The one thing I would say to that is that I'd be concerned with how fragile a model is compared to the minis. Especially on the Y wing, with all of the piping. That, and the FM Falcon is way to expensive to play with casually like that =P

It would look like a command center operations table. You would have to dress like General Reiken or Admiral Ackbar. I vote Ackbar. You have to talk like him too.

It's a TRAP!!!

Sorry, I couldn't help it.

I had the same thoughts after seeing the finemolds models several months ago. The Falcon is a small fortune though. Extra large movement and firing templates will be needed.

That would make a great convention game to catch people's attention!

"It's a tarp!"

The playmat, that is.

Eh, I build them for the joy of building them usually, and since miniatures games got started by modelers wanting a way to legitimately play with their models, it's kind of coming full circle with this idea. ;)

I was actually going to get twenty-four X-wings eventually and do Red and Rogue Squadrons (Rogue Squadron would be the Bacta War paint schemes). I'm also going to get some more TIEs as fun little weekend projects. I just thought this would be a neat way to use them besides letting them collect dust on my shelves. :)

If you make coaster size focus and evade tokens, lmk. I'd be all over that.

Yeah, for you being able to play with them is a fringe benefit. You're going to buy and build them anyway, even if the only thing they do is sit on a shelf. So getting to play with them on top of that is a good deal.

Me, and others like me, who don't already have these models, wouldn't find them cost effective to buy and build enough to play a game.

But I have to admit at $25-30 for a X-Wing, it's tempting to get one just for the sake of having it on display.

Now I want the 1:72 Lambda to have a cargo bay that opens to reveal the 1:270 Lamdbas. Surprise!

A number of the people I play with like star wars, and lego. As such a number of them have star wars lego.

We are looking at doing a similar scale game. With lego.

Between the group we have something like 4 ties, a shuttle, falcon, a couple of x wings. Should be able to squeeze in a 100pt game.

One of the main issues is finding a space to play.

Pics when it happens :)

1:72 Scale would be quite awesome, I figure a 10' by 5' table would get it done :-)

I just checked out the models and they are quite awesome.

Are they pre-painted?

**** you man, just what I need, something else to occupy my mind and money :-)

Considering we played our Gundam rpg using 1/100 master grade models (which for 65 ft tall mobile suits is not exactly small) and had a blast i see that as a brilliant idea, though obviously not as affordable (which is why we switched to the 1/144 scale) as standard X Wing. Worth it if you have the models though.

I don't think a table would be able to handle it. The Falcon would be about 28 inches long. a movement template would take it off the table on the first move. Probably have to be in a gym floor. But it would be epic.

I would totally participate in this lunacy. GenCon, here we come.

Heck, I'd be more than happy to supply the models and other paraphernalia! :D

I'd just need to build them first. ;)

I think this afternoon I'm going to see about making a base for my X-wing and Y-wing models which is the equivalent of an XMG base in proportional size.

No, they're completely unpainted and unassembled, which for a modeler is awesome because I can paint them pretty much any way I want. The X-wings do come with decals so you can replicate four different ships, though: Red 1, Red 2, Red 3, and Red 5.

Y-wings have decal options for Gold 1, 2, and 3.

TIE Fighters can be marked up with squad leader markings, perfect for Squad Leader (heh-heh).

Currently Finemolds have the following models:

X-wing

Y-wing

TIE Fighter

TIE Interceptor

TIE Advanced x1

Slave I

Millennium Falcon

Jedi Starfighter

The Falcon and Slave I can be substituted with their AMT/Ertl equivalents, as those are nearly the same size and far cheaper.

Epic win just thinking about this. There will have to be pictures!

I would only use said models in games using the old 25mm West End Games Star Wars miniatures, for me the regular mini's are great enough. ;-)
