4 friends over tonight - which quest is good?

By Exprise, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey Guys,

I have 4 friends coming over tonight and have put my campaign on hold to resume another time.

I figured we will only have time for dinner and 1 quest so i was wondering which quest you can recommend. (2 part should be alright i think)

Only 2 of us have played descent before.

I have only the Core Set at this time. The other 3x expansions are still in post.

Maybe something under 2 1/2 hrs so people can get home to sleep for work tomorrow.

Is it worth doing 'Epic Play' ? - I thought it would be - but I am new and have never done that before. I have only played the First Blood and Castle Daederus (spelling?)

Any recommendations are appreciated =)

Thanks Guys!

If you are going for a one-shot quest, epic play allows you to try some of the "toys" that one only purchases through a campaign. I would recommend it.

As for choosing a quest, A Fat Goblin is nice - and Death on the Wing is not too hard on the heroes.

I would stick to an Act I quest for a start.

I would totally second A Fat Goblin and Death on the Wing. They are both great and are not too hard on the heroes.

I might also suggest though, doing first blood and then the first part of Fat Goblin, instead of doing a two-part quest with epic heroes.

This will let your friends experience the game without adding complexity that is difficult to understand before they've had a chance to play. It also lets them do the XP and shopping phases which is one of the most rewarding parts of playing a hero. And so you leave it with a cliffhanger... maybe they'll come back and play some more?

Let us know what you decide and how it worked out.

Hey Guys,

Thanks so much for your recommendations! One friend was late as he is flying out tomorrow morning so this was our last catch up.

We played Death on the Wing: Encounter 1 and it was awesome.

At one point I had a hero [H] surrounded with 3x boulders [X], 2x spiders and there was a wall to the left of him. I was not sure if this meant I win but did not want to cut the game short so I did not bring this up.

The heroes won at the end but it was very enjoyable.

This is the first time i have used the Master Ettin.

He has Throw - is this counted as an attack or can I throw then attack as my two actions?

Thanks again!

You should've won.

A monster ability only counts as an attack if it uses the word "attack."

Yeah, as the Overlord I let things slide just to keep the game going and let everyone have some fun.

This depends on what point in the game you had this. The loss only happens at the end of a hero's turn if that hero is surrounded. So in this case, if that hero had just ended his turn like that, you would've won. Whereas if you ended your turn like that, every hero would've had the opportunity to try and clear out space around him first, (himself included).

Played part two of Death on the Wing just then and it was over within 5 minutes. Elemental was out in two hits. Balthar? Had only 9hp as we played with 2 heroes. He got hit for 4 in one hit and then 5 in another. My open group managed to do 3 damage to only one guard.

Can the guards only attack once per shot if they do not move?

Either way they smashed my open group and i did not stand a chance! haha

It was fun but is it usually a hard quest for the overlord? Did I play it wrong?

Unlucky dice rolls sound like the main culprit. But for what it's worth, here's my strategy for encounter 2 that worked against three heroes:

1) Select Ettins as the open group. Focus them entirely on slaughtering the guards.

2) Move immediately away from the heroes with Belthir, preferably to the water section of the main tile, keeping the Elemental in between the heroes and him whenever possible. Use the Elemental's ability to immobilize (I think it's Earth?) to slow their pursuit of Belthir.

3) For the final room of guards, try to get Belthir into a corner of the room, and either block the entry or Belthir with your Ettin or Elemental, separating Belthir and the last guards from the heroes! As long as the Ettin/Elemental is closer to the guards than Belthir, they'll be forced to attack the E/E.

Again, these are just my thoughts based on one play of Death on the Wing. The dice rolls can thwart any well-hatched plan.
