Fire spray or lambda which is superior?

By Darthfish, in X-Wing

The Shuttle and Firespray are both outstanding ships and work in entirely different ways and require different support ships flying with them.

I am beginning to like flying the Shuttle, I'm beginning to like flying it with a Firespray. It's not an either or for me.

I am really thinking of going with 2 x BH and a Shuttle instead of 3 x BH next time I fly three big ships.

They are similar, but I think the Firespray is superior even if you include the extra points.

1st reason - maneuverability. Let's face it the Shuttle'd dial is the worst in the game. This can be addressed by giving the shuttle the Engine Upgrade (which I find pretty much required for any shuttle other than the Vader-Suicide) But even if the upgrade brought the manuverality up to that of a Firespray (which I don't think it does), it costs your action to get it that way.

2nd reason - 2 agility dice + evade action. Even though they have the same number of HPs the Firespray still lives way longer.

3rd reason - Rear arc. That rear arc is awesome. It can take a little bit of time to learn how to use it, but I love it. Try giving the Firespray Expert Handling. The only upgrades I think I like better are Y-wings with ion turrets and A-wings/TIE Interceptors with PTL.

yeah. that rear arc is awesome and catches people by surprise a lot. i was at a tournament where i was TO for a small grp of players and one player who was playing a 3 ship rebel build vs a Firespray squad and the rebel player looks at me and says "he can't do that!" - the Slave1 was doing a flyby at close range and shooting with his rear arc.

My response - "Um sure he can, Firespray's have a rear firing arc!" (points to the rear arc on the ship)

I really wanted the Shuttle to have the ability to use a 360 ion cannon but that would mostly negate its poor movement dial so i can understand why designers didnt allow that. I am also looking at squads that combine BOTH the shuttle and the Firespray. The challenge im finding is putting in enough high PS pilots.

Squads currently in development:

S.A.S Patrol (99pts)

Omicron Group Pilot + FCS + Gunner + Engine Upgrade (32)

Bounty Hunter + HLC + Recon Specialist (43)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

BOooo Squad (99pts)

Bounty Hunter + Recon Specialist (36)

Omicron Group Pilot + Vader crew (24)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)

Initial thoughts:

  1. A change im considering is dropping the HLC and using those 7pts to upgrade the BH to a name pilot.
  2. Recon Specialists ability to boost both offense and defense at the same time makes it a virtual lock in my squad.
  3. Iv considered running two shuttles WITH a BH, one Doom Shuttle with Vader crew and one Buzzsaw shuttle with FCS/Gunner/Boost upgrades but the options given by running 2-3 cheap tie-fighters imo are more needed.
  4. SAS Patrol squad above has been tested, although not extensively and early signs have been encouraging - those cheap ties can really get in lots of shots as they are largely left alone by the enemy who tend to focus on the big ships.

The rear arc of the Firespray is it's greatest boon. I'm constantly confused why people keep putting HLC on the firespray. you force yourself to use your main arc and miss out on your best ability. Gunner tends to be a better upgrade as it affects both front and rear arc. The Firespray seems made for a fly by, taking just enough damage to almost kill it and dare ships to chase it where it can take advantage of its rear arc, open flying lanes and continuously taking the evade action.

the HLC on the lambda reinforces it's niche as a long range gun. It doesn't have a rear arc to be exploited and even with an HLC equiped the Omicron lambda is still 5 points cheaper than the Bounty hunter.

Also, for funzies put weapons engineer in with FCS and gunner.

Because Krassis.

@WonderWAAAGH

Yes, Krassis is my favorite pilot on the Firespray. At least he has the best ability. Even though he has the lowest PS of all the named Firespays he has the best ability. It seems kinda backwards from all other ships.

Though I would like to try this

Kath Scarlet + Deadeye + Rec Spec + Slave I + Advanced Torpedoes

PtL would probably be better than Deadeye, unless you load her up with ordinance.

The idea is to be able to fire at the best target and not have to choose until firing thanks to dead eye and that extra focus.

Krassis is unquestionably the best Pilot amongst all of them, for firing secondary weapons. More so if you can easily get him target locks for any missile he might carry.

This doesn't change HLC on BH, Boba, and Kath. Heck I'd easily rather have EH and Gunner on boba and Kath for some arc dodging late game.
