growing pains

By Duke of Advil, in X-Wing

I am out growing my current Plano case....well I have exceeded its limit because it will not hold any of the 3 big ships, Lamba, which I have yet to buy, my Falcon and my Slave 1.

Here is my question:

What is the dimensions of the capital ships that are coming out? If I am going to get something bigger I do not want to get a case that is an inch or two too short.

Has anyone addressed this issue themselves and found a Plano that can handle both their current fleets and the upcoming ones?

Ive got the 5231 and can fit 1 x falcon and 1 x slave in it, then ive got a folder for cards, rules etc. I've also got a second case for when I expand so will be able to fit at least 1 more of each large ship.

I'm using this

I have all of my tokens, dice, and damage deck sorted into different bins in the top. The mod cards are in one of the larger top bins. The maneuver templates, asteroids, and range ruler are on the left side of the large slot (pictured with a yellow level) and on the right side, I have all of my rebel dials and cardboard boxes, with separators between each ship. The other large bin has the plastic bases.

In the bottom, I have 3 16x8 pluck foam trays, one for the large ships, one for imp, and one for rebels. This leaves about 2 inches of room behind them that I have all the rule books, FAQ, Tourney rules, and tourney sheets (for when I TO). And it leaves 8 inches to the side, where I made two trays for the imp dials and cardboard. I also have a deck box in there for all the pilot cards. This leaves a small area completely unoccupied, which I currently have extra stuff stored (cardboard shields, focuses, and stress since the top only has the acrylics, scenario tokens, second set of asteroids, etc).

As I have it currently setup, it won't hold the larger ships since I have foam going the entire height of it. However, if I had the proper size foam tray, I could likely get away with just one 10x22 tray of foam on the bottom, leaving 6 inches of clearance for the large ships. Though honestly, I'm likely to just transport the large ships separately since they're not used in tourney play anyways.

I've got four Plano 3750s from Wal-Mart. They're deep enough that they comfortably hold all three Large ships, although the Lambda only fits with wings folded and on its side. The YTs and Firesprays fit with no problems at all.

I've gone with one of these: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-Aluminium-Tool-Case-Black.aspx?pid=3122#Cross

I've bought some foam to go into it and will cut hole to push the plastic clamshell packaging into after I trim it down so that it will look something like this:

I will use this for everything up to wave four and possibly including wave four. Once I run out of space, I will look at getting battlefoam or something similar to use their pack systems. For the capital ships I will store them in their plastic clamshell packaging inside a shoebox or similar until I can find a good solution. Although they may just stay like that since I doubt I will be lugging them around very often and only for planned battles. As a result the requirement for rugged transportable packaging is reduced.

A lot of great suggestions. One thing I asked but never got answered is does anyone know the dimentions of the up coming big ships?

I don't think they have been released, but you can make a guestimate by looking at the base size (since those are the same bases as the Falcon apparently) and extrapolate from there.

I believe the best guestimates are 8'' and 11'' iirc. You can search through the forums back towards gencon to see what people that saw them in person thought.

The Corellian Corvette looks to be about 14" long to me. I'm planning to just put it back in its package if I need to take it anywhere.

I got a BF shield bag, they are actually pretty cheap as far as BF stuff goes... I currently store the following ships in ONE shield box.. with room for a small plastic divider box on the top for ALL my tokens and range rulers etc. i keep my cards in a separate binder. once "Aces" comes out it will be full. however I will probably just get another shield bag and segregate the two factions.

Millennium Falcon..... 3

Slave 1………………..3

A wing………………….6

B wing fighters…....….6

X wing…………..….….6

Y wing……….….……..8

Imperial shuttle….......3

Tie Fighter…………...8

Tie bomber…………. 6

Tie Advanced…....….6

Tie Interceptor......….6

HWK-290…………... 4

Oh my, quite the collection. Do you routinely play >100 points? If not, you could separate the two into <100 pt squads and >100 squads... It should open up 1 A, 2 X, 2 B, 4 Y, 2 adv, 1 Int... plus however many interceptors you get from aces. But it looks like you're still missing a shuttle and 2 HAWKS :)

I've got a Sword bag on the way from them that I custom loaded to hold my entire planned fleet, plus a tray for accessories, and still had enough room for a 2" pluck foam tray for the next wave or 2

i use the Stanley Sortmaster junior, it comes in packs of 3 from Rona for 25$ and Canadian tire sells them individually for 10$
