Any sign of Suns of Fortune yet?

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hope those of you that have gotten your hands on the book are having as much fun reading as I did writing! Curious to hear about how incorporating the various modular encounters goes!

Nice. Sounds like a lot of fun! I like the website, good stuff man.

He's done some good stuff in EoE! Looking forward to this one hitting the UK!

He's also a good-looking guy...!

I shall stop there before I sound too creepy and stalker-ish! :)

You guys did a great job on this book. I just got it today and devoured it.

One question that I hope you can answer. Why was the design decision made to not include at least line art illustrations of the various ships and beasties? Was there a reason or was it simply for lack of space?

Got mine today from Miniature Market. Unfortunately, now I have to go to work for 12 hours.

I must admit I'd like to see pictures of equipment too, FangGrip.

I would have liked to see a few non-Caucasian humans in the art, but it seems that we might have to wait for a sourcebook on the Naboo royal guard for that.

With a planet called Nubian, I was honestly expecting a bit more diversity.

Hey, I just noticed. In the equipment section there seems to be a listing in the table for a Grav Belt. I don't see a description anywhere for one.

Am I just missing it or does there need to be some errata?

I'm confused. There aren't any Caucasian humans in the art, since, y'know, Caucasia is a region on Earth and doesn't exist in the GFFA.

OK, how about more dark-skinned humans. I can't think of any good examples that resemble the peoples of North America, the Middle East, Northern Africa, South Asia (India) or Southeast Asia, and only a few that resemble the indigenous peoples of Sub-Saharan Africa (and most of those show features that most resemble those with features that blend in those of Europeans).

Basically, for a big galaxy, way too many of the humans look like white Americans.

Fang: In regard to the art, I can't help you. I imagine space is at a premium though, and all the beautiful painting work can't be cheap from a production standpoint. I know going to wookieepedia for an image isn't ideal, but at least it is something.

By the way, for those interested, I just had an article go up at StarWars.com that acts as a sort of online supplement (no stats) to the Centerpoint Station entry. You can check that out at the official blog at www.starwarsblog.starwars.com

I got mine today and it looks like a lot of fun from what I read. Still disappointed that no Frigate stats were included, and praying this isn't a sigh of things gong the Saga route for Frigate stats

Counting both the Clone Wars Books and all the Galactic Civil War books Saga had stats for 11 classes, using the in universe definition of a frigate rather than the names. That doesn't sound too bad. But two of those were designed or mainly used for cargo use, three if you include the Corona which calls itself a transport but has more punch then most combat frigates of the era. One was designed for medical use, Two were meant for combat but their weapons were so specialized that they were scrap metal if a corvette showed up while it had no backup. And one was basically a heavy cruiser's weapons, defenses, fighter, crew, and passenger compliments somehow crammed into a frigate sized hull. And I can think of at least three sources that they statted Corvette, Cruiser, Star Destroyer, or some combination of the above classes of vessel from and either ignored the Frigates introduced in those sources completely, or included a class useless against another capital ship and ignored those which could be used in capital ship on capital ship fights, and were intended for combat.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to pick up the book till next week, but I find myself needing the Ronto stats pretty bad. Can anyone give me those? I want to know what the beast of burdens stats are!

I would also buy a book all about ships. Especially if it included things like the cost to keep a ship operating, more options/ideas for running cargo and smuggling, Pirates, etc.

I would love a book of all ships of various stripes. I would buy that in a hot second!

I'd also like to get my hands on a generic vehicles book, and a book of just random NPCs. Basically this game needs all kinds of stats from all over the map.

I dont understand why they havent put out a ships, vehicles, droids, tech and creatures books. The fluff for all is pre-written, rules for modding would be fairly common between 4 of those, and they would be extremely useful to running the game. I can see the art being a problem, but if they are going to get art for something as obscure and ugly as the PB-950 I think it is a problem they can overcome.

I would buy those as soon as it came out. Though honestly, at least for the ship and vehicle guides, if I were making them I would wait and do joint guides for Edge of the Empire and Age of Rebellion. Especially for ships since no cruiser class and larger (400 meters long and up.) vessels have been included in Edge, As much as I would love to see them now I would rather wait and get one of each guide than have to get two

Because they are not doing it that way. That seems pretty clear at this point.

For better or for worse, they are giving us everything - species, guns, gear, ships, creatures - in bite-sized pieces in their various sourcebooks.

We might possibly see a compendium at the end of the series, but I'm absolutely certain it won't be anytime soon.

Bear in mind, FFG is a business, and I think the splatbooks wouldn't sell as well if they released a big book for races, droids, ships or gear. This way, you need to get Suns of Fortune if you want the stats for Selonians or Drall, for instance. I intend to buy them all anyway, so I'm not complaining.

With a planet called Nubian, I was honestly expecting a bit more diversity.

To quote Banky: "what's a nubian?"

While I actually think it's very cool to see different human ethnicities - we have a 'black' character and an 'Asian' character in our AoR group - I think we're on dangerous ground trying to make Star Wars politically-correct. While I loved that Lando and Oola were played by black actors, in a world of bizarre species, I doubt there's a lot of what we would call 'racism' among humans.

Heck, if anything, that seems to be the case with droids in the SW universe.

I'm all for having different coloured humans, twi'leks, togruta, etc, but we maybe shouldn't read too much into it. Lando certainly isn't 'African-American', because there is no Africa or America. I assume he's a human whose ancestors were from a very hot world, or a hot part of a temperate world, as that's how melamine is determined in our world.

Which gets us into the awkward territory of toydarians and neimodians, really...

EoE seems pretty ethnically diverse anyway; the Driver character in EtU is brown-skinned.

Should be interesting when we have 3 core books in print....good times if they stay focused.

No, really. There is a planet called Nubian in this book. Populated mostly by humans.

It's not really about forcing ethnicities and cultures into the fluff. It's about diversity in the look and feel of the game. RPGs are pretty whitewashed products and it's nice for people of color to see themselves reflected in the art of the game, sometimes.

I am actually aware. I just like quoting Chasing Amy.

Yes, but only if it's appropriate for them to be so. I actually like Pathfinder for incorporating Asian, African and Arabic cultures as central to their world and having examples of these characters in their iconics. But I wouldn't be happy with someone sticking black characters in, say, One Ring, if there's no equivalent culture in the Wilderlands area that would support them.

Representation is good. Tokenism is bad.

If Corellia has a warm area where darker-skinned people might have come from, or an in-universe reason for them to be there in large numbers, then great. Sticking them in for no reason? Not so great.

And as I said, EoE isn't too bad in this regard. We have a very rakish picture of Lando, looking all smooth, and the iconic Driver character, Janese, is black.

Ye gods, how I hate that film. It's right up there with the prequels for me.

Yeah if you are particularly interested in only humans who evolved on said planet, I suppose that's true, and only if you are interested in verisimilitude. I'm more interested in inclusion and getting new faces into the hobby, so I'm happy when I see everyone represented in my game about people in a fictional sci-fi setting.
