Starting Character in Legion Terminator Armor

By Baron Throatpunch, in Black Crusade Rules Questions

According to the Errata, if you take Wealth as your Pride, you are have an extra un-rolled acquisition at a bonus of 20 when determining starting equipment.

The Ancient Warrior Talent (Tier One, must be taken at character creation) reduces the Availability of Legion equipment by one level. Legion Terminator Armor goes from Near-Unique (penalty of 50) to Extremely Rare (penalty of 30).

Only acquiring one item applies a bonus of 10.

Total Penalties: 30

Total Bonuses: 30

That's a starting character in Legion Terminator Armor.

I'm asking y'all to check my math, in case I'm wrong. If I'm right, I'm asking y'all, "Seriously?"

Terminator Availability: Near Unique (-50)

Errata'ed Wealth: +20 (-30 total modifier)

Ancient Warrior: +10 (-20 total modifier)

Single Set: +10 (-10 total modifier)

So "Yep".

The thing to consider is that Ancient Warrior will likely cost all of your starting XP for a Chaos Marine of 500 meaning you cannot get anything else and a good chunk of your human experience points, although some would argue "do you really need it when you're a walking tank?"

As an Unaligned Tier 1 Talent, Ancient Warrior costs 250 Experience. And human characters wouldn't benefit quite as much, because it specifically has to be a Legion item to get the Availability break.

I am one of those people who would argue, "Do you really need it?" which is why I raise the question. Thanks for checking my maths!

I think both maths are a little bit off. Yes it is possible to get a Terminator Armour, but only in poor quality. Th Pride Wealth only grants an additional acquisition that has an end modifier of +20, at least I think. This is not a bonus to one of the starting acquisitions. To get a Terminator Armour the right modifiers are:

Terminator Armour Availability with Ancient Warrior (-30)

Single Item (+10)

Poor Quality (+10)

= -10.

Yes, Pride grants an additional Acquisiton at +20.

Extremely Rare: -30

Single Item: +10

Common Craftsmanship: +0

So I think it works even at Common Craftsmanship.

The wording is a little patchy. The original description states you have a +20 bonus on an extra acquisition test. Based then on the errata which says its an extra acquisition roll you get another and get the +20 as a bonus modifer but it still has to equate to the same -10 that all others reach.

Anyway this has I believe been addressed in the forums somewhere via a rules question to the designers, and yes you can start out with Legion Terminator armour.

Is there any way to hunt down the post where they answered that question? My Google-fu does not seem up to the task.

Oh jeeze. It's in one of the old rules-questions compilations threads I think..

The tier 1 slaaneshi talent that gives you +10 to aquisitions also helps. A bit tricky to start with though, as you need to 40 Infamy.

Not sure what that means, but I don't intend to complain. I'm just wondering if it's possible, which it seems to be. The player in me is elated by such an opportunity, but the GM in me hopes all his players don't take the option.

I would let a PC start with this, provided she/he was also made aware that smart enemies - with resources - will do their utmost to take out the PC in question.

"Wave to the Lascannons boys, just smile and wave".

And then I would most likely be amused by all the places the PC will be unable to go.

Say, if they were running out of an exploding (or soon to be exploding) Imperial facility, and discover that the only way out is a small maintenance duct which an unarmored marine will be hard pressed to wriggle through..

Teehee.

Just throw lots of running away from things or towards things, that'll make it nice and mean. :)

I mean that if you look through the Black Crusade forum archives, you'll see a few longish threads with names like "collected rules questions." I believe it's in one of those.

I don't think the Termie armour is that big of a deal. It's a high-power game.

And Terminator Armour has that little thing where you can't dodge... I am still debating on if thats worth it with myself.

Thanks, bogi!

Also note the restrictions on weapons you can use in terminator plate - the starting character won't be armed with them (unless you spend your other acquisitions on a combi-bolter and blade)
