2 Bombers Proton Bombs or Homing Missiles (or other)

By AlexW, in X-Wing

I'm now happy with my Rebels list that I'll be using in a week and am toying around with some Empire lists (my opponents and I often switch it up each game).

I've been enjoying a 2x Avenger Squadron, Captain Jonus (with swarm), and Gamma Squadron (each with adv proton torpedos and concussion missiles).

I really like the combo of the interceptors and bombers. I've found, though that bombers are really effective for the missiles they carry and have been running and once they're gone -- or just being unable to use them because of positioning means a loss on the bombers.

I've especially found the adv torps a tough go to get full effect and would like to swap them out for proton bombs, homing missiles or possibly something else.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Proton Bombs are HUUUGE. They deal a face-up damage card to the defending ship, regardless of their shields.

With it, you can theoretically 1-shot an entire fleet of A-Wings if you get lucky with your draws, or 2 shot any other small-ship in the game (save for Y-Wings).

And that's just the Direct Hit! damage card. If your rebel felet relies on Secondary Weapons in any way, a munitions failure takes care of THAT. Or how about dropping their guy with Squad Leader to a level 0 pilot? Et cetera, et cetera.

Proton Bombs cripple fleets.

I've had proton bombs work well for me in the past but my current loadout for bombers in a competitive list is concussion missiles and assault missiles. I decided to go with assault missiles for the fact that a lot of lists employ flying in formation. It is possible to get quite a bit of damage out of a single salvo of assault missiles, especially when playing against a TIE swarm. Case in point, in a match a while back, I was facing off against a modified TIE swarm list. In my first shot of the match, I fired assault missiles and one shot one TIE fighter while dealing out another point of damage to three other ships that were within range one. Granted, this is an exemplary case where my opponent managed not to avoid a single hit while I rolled all hits and focus and was able to convert focus to hits. But even had I not one shot the TIE I shot at, I still would have done the one damage to all ships at range one. My current bomber list consists of Major Rhymer, Captain Jonus, and Colonel Jendon. Lambda's can put out pretty nice damage so long as you keep enemy ships within it's firing arc while Colonel Jendon allows to me transfer TL to my bombers so I can spend my ordinance early on instead of having my ships destroyed without getting it off. I also use the title on my Lambda so I can TL first turn and hand off the TLs to my bombers. I don't recall off the top of my head what other upgrades I use in this list but I have found it to be fairly competitive. The key is keeping all ships in somewhat close formation so that Rhymer can play off of Jonus' ability.
