YT1300 conversion

By LukesFather, in X-Wing

I was working on trying to come up with my own version of a Rebel Smuggler. I Have 2 YTs already, and I want to be able to tell them apart right away by just looking at them. After all you CAN'T have 2 Falcons out there!

BUT I really don't want to damage up the actual models, So I am going to paint the one of them but still wanted something no one else has. I picked up the Snap Tite Falcon. Its a little smaller, but not a ton. did the work on that as if I mess up its me down 10$ and not 30$.

SO after looking online at other conversions and find some pics to pull from. I did a YV-545 (at least on wookiepeia the pics are under that. So mine is more a YV and YT had a baby.

I took off a mandible, took off the radar dish and moved it, took out the center area to smooth it out.

this is WIP, so I need to make some panels for the center, and repaint it.

Not a bad mod.. I have one of those as well.. got it awhile back as a possible use on the table.. but the size difference has kept me from using it.. and now I have 3 YTs and one is repainted.

I just recently saw someone had used a YT for space debris.. The whole thing with holes blasted through it.. and thought I might use mine to do the same.. looked really good as space junk.

Could use it for some space junk in Rodents Cosmic Phenomenon card set.. might just cut it in half and use both sides for junk.. hmmm to the drawing board I go..

I'll do a side by side. If your looking for "canon" which I am not really, the YV is smaller I think, so. I'm just looking to be able to look on the table and tell my ships apart from my own and the other guy if they are running YTs.

UPDATE - WIP conversion.

so made some more headway on this conversion. Got more inspired after playing a tournament this past weekend and seeing someones Yt they painted. That gave me the bug to try and finish this one up.

This first set of images are of the detail added. Most of it is plasticard or taking parts of the model and reusing them.

This is the painted look. Still need to do some more touch up and probably a wash on it.

That's a great conversion! I was with you all the way... until the blue. Pour on more ink wash and chip some paint off those panels! Really great job. :)

I need to pick up some more greys. Was trying to do like a blue camo with blue greys and maybe white. I know the wash will bring down the brightness some. (I also like BLue) It was almost the blazing orange I have.

Blue is a fine color, I may repaint my 3rd one in blue, following the circular aspect around the hull and shifting on the layers.. dark or light it all comes out in the wash.. lol

I think I'll practice my conversion on a similar one that you used.. gonna shift the cockpit to the port side.. wanna practice before I do it on the FFG model.. lol

This is my first conversion. No way was I going to ruin my good ones. i know this one is just for kicks and house games. Im just going to paint the 2nd yt. I have an idea in red design, but I have to maybe photo shop it first to see if thats what I want to do.

I would probably put a wash over it, it's looking a touch lego-like at the moment and that would help it look part of the Star Wars universe.

I think I'm done! I did some more grey panels (mostly on top as the bottom will rarely be seen. Then I did a wash over the ship to make it dirty and dull the blueyness. Also added a nice mix for the engine, I had enough that I did my 2 shuttles and one of my other YTs

If you are gonna do blue, I'd say do the WHOLE thing blue, then maybe add some different shades... mix your blue with black also, do some dark blue... then add more black to your mixture.... make about 4 different shades of blue and then do a wash of maybe bright blue at the very end.

Just my opinion... i'm no pro though.

I find that mixing in some of the colour you use to highlight the grey areas with the blue, and then using it on the edges and highlights of the blue helps pull it all together. And of course washes, I used a camo wash so it has a bit of green in with the brown and black, which causes it to look a bit discoloured.

Rodent Mastermind - why do you have to go and put your Mona Lisa painting next to my drivers license photo? Your stuff ROCKS, and I think deep down I had your scheme in mind.

I was just trying to give some hints as I've done quite a bit of blue by now..

Because, well BLUE is a ***** to paint if you want it not looking pristine and newly painted.

But yours looks really nice.

I am the Jar Jar to your Metal Bikini Leia (or even white toren outfit Padame).

It means alot to hear someone that rocks the xwing painting/ modding world, that mine looks REALLy nice.

I may have to stop while I'm ahead.

Nice modelling!

Just some quick dry-brushing with light gray will give it an overall weathered look.

Great job. Love to see everyone's repaints. I haven't painted any minis before but plan to start when I get more ships.

Rodent, I was curious what you use to model the wires? Looks much better than my paper clips and green stuff.

Very interesting and very cool. I love it! (of course, I love most not-falcons) I do have one piece of generic advice.

Thin your paints, and use more than one coat. Better to apply four thin coats than one thick coat. It will give you a smoother, more uniform look.

Also, if you would like to bring a more "patchwork" look to it, you can wash those blue tiles after the fact to change their shade subtly. Thin out some other colors (brown, white, green, etc) with water significantly and put a few coats over the tiles you've painted and it will subtly change the hue.

But that is a really awesome conversion. Is it based on something from the EU, or did you come up with it yourself. It seems vaguely familiar.
