Two Youtube vids about the upcoming Capital ships

By Veritech, in X-Wing

...as well as interviews regarding upcoming releases from the Gencon 2013 FFG tables.

Star Destroyer is comin! Probably a Victory class or somethin

im a little concerned about the affordability of the capital ships. my wallet is bracing for impact.

An Interdictor ship would be nice, and it's smaller than the SDs

Perhaps I should have saved part of my holiday bonus? ;-)

Really? I think I just won a bet.

I have referenced the first video here a few times, and have it in one of my X-WING Playlist on my YouTube channel.

Dude almost slips and says that the Star Destroyer is being worked on...funny, and cool IMO.

:)

Meh. Give me wave 4!

As much as I want to see the big boys, I hope it does not mess up the game. Keeping fingers crossed

Another question: How in the heck am I supposed to fit these things in my Battle Foam? I'm going to need a transport ship just to transport my transport ship (head swimming).

Never saw that video before... thanks for sharing.

I come from playing warhammer... its pocket change to me, I can live through x-wing new releases without selling my kidneys on E-bay.

Anyhow, I really like that they are putting the emphasis on cinematic play and mission play with the big ships. Good move!

This video was released in Aug, this isn't really new news...

If we are getting Star Destroyers, I want Imperial Class.

That's gonna take a huge table.

The Tantive and Transport are not 1:270 scale. I think it's safe to assume that any star destroyer would be slightly larger, if not the same size as the Tantive IV for the sake of space on the table..

I don't see how huge ships can mess up the game. FFG'S announcement was pretty clear that neither the Corvette nor the Transport can be used in normal, 100 point games and instead require the Epic or Cinematic play rules to be used. The normal game will remain unchanged.

I'm aware they are old, I never said they were new. However I've been watching the forums for about a month now as I own two quickly growing fleets and am perfectly happy with the game, like most I quickly invested in two starter sets then added on. I've noticed much doubt about the existence of these two ships and their actually being released, so I thought I'd chime in. I've also noticed other things that led me to toss them up. I didn't go back to the beginning but I've gone back a fair ways and didn't see any sign of posted vids, and as some have mentioned not everyone has seen them yet.

I've been silent on the forums since I helped bring down original Descent: Journeys in the Dark by pointing out severe flaws in it's campaign system. I currently own every set and expansion as well as the conversion expansion for the 2nd edition and am enjoying it thoroughly. I won as OL and the dungeon wins were pretty even, I'm now playing as two of four heroes in a three player game and the new OL is handling himself fine.

Btw. X-Wing is technically my first miniature game, I avoided the money pit that was WarHammer as much as I loved the idea and look. I will be adding Robotech tactics to my lists, I already have a large collection of Palladium RPG books even if I don't play anymore so it will be supporting two things I really enjoy.

My current fleets are pretty much standard, Rebel: 3 X-Wings, 2 Y-Wings, 2 A-Wings, 2 B-Wings, 1 HWK-290 and a YT-1300. Imperials: 7 Tie Fighters (one got stepped on and replaced, then repaired by me), 3 Interceptors, 3 Advanced, 1 Bomber (they were sold out), 1 Slave-1, and 1 Imperial Shuttle, as well I have both the capital ships, 2 of the Imperial Aces, starmap tiles (if they get released) and several other ships on order from the local distributor Citadel Games to further fill out my fleets. I am still having trouble finding players, my current pair like Descent, and my secondary group prefers games like UNO and Dice...

I may start seeing if I can find players at the local game store, he's been pushing me to try and start things there with some of the games I've purchased.

I'm a little disappointed that several of my ships are really badly assembled, and the paint jobs on the X-Wings and Ties are completely different quality, higher in the starter, rushed and hasty in the expansions. All of my Tie Interceptors have wonky wings, I had to break my original Advanced to straighten one wing which made the thing look like it had clipped the side of a something (force headache for Vader... I dunno...), I'm a little worried that trying to do the same with the Interceptors will cause damage I won't be able to undo, most of the other ships are fine, it's mostly Imperial Ties (all types but Bomber) that seem to suffer from crappy assembly.

Otherwise I love this game, and have no complaints, it plays well, fast, it's super easy to pick up and learn, strategies can vary considerably and FFG is putting some good effort into keeping it from stagnating. Lets hope they manage to keep a good balance to this game for a long long time.

17 meters if they are to scale with the fighters. Nut I get the impression that the Corvete and Transport are a trial run for much bigger, not-to-scale ships.

The Tantive and Transport are not 1:270 scale. I think it's safe to assume that any star destroyer would be slightly larger, if not the same size as the Tantive IV for the sake of space on the table..

Oh, come on. An ISD has a docking bay that can swallow a CR 90. Even at twice the size of the Tantive IV, this would just be so wrong. And the size of the miniature is just the beginning. How can you represent all the firepower that a single ISD has relative to the fighters? I can just envision the battle now...

"My ISD fires 8 turbo lasers at Wedge, 6 at Luke, 4 a piece at each of the 10 Rookies and 6 at each Y-Wing. Then I launch 20 Tie fighters to intercept the B-Wings bringing up the rear..."

All this from a 2' model? Please. At best star destroyers have small sections represented by entire maps with local features that can engage in the battle. If you want a model that is manageable on the board, pick a smaller ship. There might be some that could come in under three feet. And for goodness sake, if you are going to bring in a ship twice the size of the Tantive IV, don't scale it down to the same size as the CR90, increase the playing area so the larger ship can still maneuver. As much as a capital ship out-maneuvering a fighter makes sense, anyways.

Sorry for the rant, I just don't think people are thinking this through when they suggest making star destroyers.

All distances in this game are abstract, and we are already getting ships that are not to scale with the current stuff. The scale barrier has been broken. A ship merely needs to have a suitable footprint on the table and interact with other ships' footprints in a way that feels "big." There are ways to accomplish this without actually having an enormous to-scale toy spaceship, but you have to think outside of the box, as they say. Don't underestimate the ingenuity of FFG's game designers. They'll figure out a way to make it work, if they want to.

For example: To avoid the visual disconnect of a Star Destroyer and Corellian Corvette on the same table at roughly the same size, you simply don't allow them both during the same scenario. Hey, that was easy.

No. A ship needs a way to actually represent what it really is, or else it has no purpose other then a backdrop.

The CR-90 is not that far out of scale to the fighters, both in terms of size and more importantly firepower. 2 flights of Tie Fighters and 1 flight of Bombers would actually be a threat to a CR-90. It would however take about 10 squads of Rebel ships to be a serious threat to a ISD, and even the its iffy.

The only way to put a ISD into the game as something other then terrain is neuter it to the point it's no longer really a ISD, it's nothing more then a glorified corvette.

Edit: Also once again, because I've said this a number of times before...

If they want to do Imperial ships to match the CR-90 there's plenty of other options out there already that fit in terms of size and firepower. There is no need to destroy a ISD just to give the Imp's a big ship.

Slightly off topic, I'd like to extend Kudos to the several players that actually built appropriately sized ISDs. They took the spirit of the game to an extreme, and the results were incredible. Impractical for most of us, but incredible none the less.

I really, really wish they had just made a seperate game with the capital ships all in scale (corvettes etc roughly the same as small ships in the current game, star destroyers more like falcon size or w/e) with roughly the same rules. A few minor changes to simulate more of a fleet battle than a dogfight, make capitals move like capitals etc, have tokens maybe to represent entire fighter wings or something. I'm ok with having the transport and corvette in this game with a larger point format, but that is because those ships are on the very low end of the capital ship size scale and they seem to be pushing it to me. When you start talking star destroyers......Its going to look so wierd having a star deestroyer that is only like 10% bigger than the corvette, cause really how big are they really going to make it? Even in the "incorrect scale" of the corvette it would still be like 10x the size. The corvette/transport not being exactly to scale with the fighters isn't terribly noticeable, but a star destroyer that is only marginally bigger than the corvette would start to remind me of cheap WoTC minis.

EDIT: Seems others have already made similar posts. TLDR = Wish they had just made seperate game. That being said i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to match stardestroyers against mon cals etc if it was it's own game.

If they want to make a ship that looks like a classic Imperial ship they should go with a Vindicator class cruiser. If they made it the same size as the corvette it wouldn't look as out of place as an ISD or even a VSD. The good thing about making a Vindicator model is that they can reuse it to make a Immobilizer 418 (aka Interdictor cruiser).

I'd rather see them stick to small ships and make Carrick's or Lancers and Strike Cruisers or some much needed Neb B frigates.
