Challenge: Breaking the game, 3rd faction.

By PS10, in X-Wing

Someone at our club really wants to play some imp and rebel ships at the same time, but this would naturally be a bit too powerful.

Ok apparently, the rules are quite restricted to make any sort of strong list, so here are the new rules:

Pirate faction v2.0:

  • All ships types can be used. (Example: interceptors with x-wings)
  • All unique ships and upgrades are banned. (Example: no Howlrunner or Nien Nub)

Can we break this?

So I came up with a simple pirate faction:

  • All ships types can be used. (Example: interceptors with x-wings)
  • All unique ships and upgrades are banned. (Example: no Howlrunner or Nien Nub)
  • All regular ships become unique. (Example: An academy and obsidian tie would be fine)

Your task? Break this!

Prove me wrong by posing a list with explanation why this would be way to powerful.

Edited by PS10

It is very hard to break this without named pilots.

Certainly sounds balanced.

The thing I would gravitate towards would be something like:

Dagger + advanced sensors= 27

Blue+ advanced sensors= 25

Green + PTL+ missile

Obsidian squad = 13

Academy tie= 12

Something that adds 2 bigger/tougher rebel ships and ties instead of Y's/A's.

Alternately- Y and Tie swarm.

Without the named nothing big jumps out.

Ok apparently, the 3 rules are quite restricted. How about removing the last rule:

Pirate faction v2.0:

  • All ships types can be used. (Example: interceptors with x-wings)
  • All unique ships and upgrades are banned. (Example: no Howlrunner or Nien Nub)

Can we break this?

Yes...ish

2x Rebel Operative

+ Ion Cannon

+ Saboteur

[23 Each]

2x Scimitar Squadron Pilot

+ Proton Bombs

[21 Each]

Academy Pilot

[12]

The Ion Turrets help pin ships in place for a more accurate Proton Placement.

If you manage to pull a crit from the Proton Bombs that resolves itself (fairly likely, honestly) you can use the Saboteurs to keep haranguing that ship.

The Academy Pilot is there because I had 12 points left over :)

We have tried to use Hwk, Firespray and Falkon

That is only 3 ships, but with many upgrade-uptions the can be changed a great deal

How about three Blue Squadron Pilots paired with a Bounty Hunter? 99 points, tough, and lots of firepower

this isnt a direct response to you post but i would actually like to see a pirate faction eg dark sun that has new ships that can be used with either faction.

Well yes you and probably loads of the community (including me :D ). This thread though has nothing to do with pirates, just a way to play both imp and rebels at the same time, this guy just only likes 1 or 2 models from each faction.

So mister Brown Bomber, now you committed to this thread, I require an answer to my question. :P

Or as Palpatine would say:

well i think it would be pretty balanced without name pilots or unique upgrades. i think multiple B-Wing paired with something hard hitting from imperials might be very good. here are my initial thoughts...

100pts

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Omicron Group Pilot + Gunner + Fire Control System + Engine Upgrade + Mercenary Copilot (34)

99pts (already been mentioned)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Bounty Hunter (33)

99pts

Black Squadron Pilot + Veteran Instincts (15)

Black Squadron Pilot + Veteran Instincts (15)

Black Squadron Pilot + Veteran Instincts (15)

Dagger Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors (27)

Dagger Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors (27)

i think this swarm would be a pain in the rear as well :)

99pts

Prototype Pilot (17)

Prototype Pilot (17)

Prototype Pilot (17)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

or...

Green Squadron Pilot + Draw Their Fire (20)

Green Squadron Pilot + Draw Their Fire (20)
Alpha Squadron Pilot (18)
Alpha Squadron Pilot + Stealth Device (21)
Alpha Squadron Pilot + Stealth Device (21)
Edited by The_Brown_Bomber

How about...

Royal Guard Pilot, Royal Guard Title, Stealth Device, Shield Upgrade, Veteran Instincts x2 (30 Points Each)

Grey Squadron Pilot, R2 unit (21 Points)

Gold Squadron Pilot, R2 unit (19 Points)

The Royal Guards would have PS8 and be rather annoying while the Y-Wings are nice and tough while still being able to pull off more red maneuvers.

not related, but we recently ran a 100pt tourney where you are allowed to mix both imps and rebs. Out of 10 participants, the 1st and 3rd place was won by lists that was purely rebs or purely imps without any mixing.

this isnt a direct response to you post but i would actually like to see a pirate faction eg dark sun that has new ships that can be used with either faction.

My firends and I are trying to make a "Fringe group" that either side could use. Bounty hunters would be in said group. I've been posting the tie wing stats on the forum recently. I posted five pilot cards today.

99pts

Black Squadron Pilot + Veteran Instincts (15)

Black Squadron Pilot + Veteran Instincts (15)

Black Squadron Pilot + Veteran Instincts (15)

Dagger Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors (27)

Dagger Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors (27)

i think this swarm would be a pain in the rear as well :)

99pts

Prototype Pilot (17)

Prototype Pilot (17)

Prototype Pilot (17)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

These look pretty strong! But not too powerful. :)

I'll think I'll stick to the rules like they currently are, unless someone manages to top this...

So no, we can't break it..just make some cool fun lists with it.

Good balancing mate.

My group does the same thing on our sunday fundays. The exact rules are no faction restrictions, no uniques. We can play pirates against regular lists, pirates against pirates, team games of Rebs + Pirates vs Imps + Pirates, or whatever.

My favorite list for this format is 2x Saber w/ PTL, 1x Dagger Squadron w/ Adv Sensors, 1x Grey Squadron w/ Ion Cannon and R2/R5 Astromech. Everyone moves at PS4, the three offensive ships have zany maneuverability tactics, and the grey has either good stress recovery or good tanking with it's choice of astromech.
