[League] Some news on how the French League is running

By PRODIGEE, in CoC General Discussion

I'm surprise not to see more information on leagues all across the world. Any news, guys ??

We're running the league for 2 weeks. We're playing it with little modifications du to the time we need to get the AP's to France. Now, everything's fine, but we were 2 weeks late. But let's talk of the League.

This is a new issue that is really interesting, despite some adaptations made to respect the spirit of this game. You start with no capacity to deckbuild a deck (or just at the lowest level), and then you try to find good complementarity with other factions.

First of all, it's hard to motivate players to play the league with all the rules for composition. It's hard to start and Cthulhu's faction has'nt got a lot of card in the pool. We decided to set the league so every factions will be represented. It's difficult, but really interesting.

We did see a huge power inherited by Shubb, with the power of Y'go plus the only eldritch tutor left (priestess of Bubastis). + Hungry Dark Young and Under the porch, this faction has something upleveled if you compare with others factions. I play Hastur, and I've got trouble to limit Shubb's growth. Even Cthuhle and Yog had problems.

I did'nt have new about Agency and miska, we'll see later.

We are currently in Week 5 here. We have exactly 7 players. Early on, Hastur and Cthulhu carried the play for the most part with Agency's 3-currency ability (when you play a Government character, choose and wound a character) practically handing it some games, but after slowly trading to improve our decks, Shub has taken over the past couple of weeks, due to its diversity of characters and ability to search out the character it needs in any given situation (Shocking Transformation and Under the Porch). Add in Priestess of Bubastis, Ghoulish Worshipper and the 2-currency power and the other factions have not been able to compete. Y'golonac has been the MVP, with Under the Porch and MInd Eater aiding it greatly.

I was going to post final results and analysis next week, after our league finishes.

we have 3 players in our league, had four, see if he comes back. but everything seems pretty even with our little group for sure. i play shub and im not doing so hot, i probably wont win leagues. its real close actually any one of us can still win except the 4th player that hasnt been around much. the one player uses yog and uses the 2 currency effect to get a bringer of fire, and can usually draw another one before i can get the gug out. so after that point there isnt much i can do with no direct kill to remove them. aspiring arists and journey to the other side helps there and performance artist has more than once shut down my porch. the other player uses cthulhu and has done pretty well too.

this coming up monday is our last game after that i can post results but there is nothing that exciting. it seems everything is more a game of luck. the games are fun but the league thing is alittle discouraging with prizes. the fact that so much of the games are luck kinda dampens the first prize thing cause from what i see every player is trying to win on luck more than skill. so youre kinda getting rewarded for being the luckiest player rather than the best.

ive see in the few games played a deck just slaughter everything then the next game or when we're just playing for fun the deck do absolutely nothing. i really dont like to see that. a players deck should reflect their skill and time put into it. ive had better luck with porch and shocking transformation kinda but its still off.

my main gripe is that if this league was suppose to be so casual the prize kit should have included everything for everyone, and you get prizes based on how many games you played or something. like if you played all 6 weeks you get a pin, if you played 3 you get a art print. something like that. luckily we didnt end up with more than 4 players cause id have felt awful if the 5th player didnt get any prizes after this run other than a poker chip....

Has the ability to trade after each match helped at all to diminish the luck factor?

Because making a trade after each of the 19 matches I've played, I now have a well-tuned deck that is ready to take on all comers. Trading for extra copies of several of the core cards has made my deck sing. I started out with a near even amount of Yog and Shub. Now, I could run an all-Shub deck if I wanted to, but I still have a sprinkling of Yog in there (Blackmoor Estates and Cthughas mainly). When I post the final League standings, I plan to list how my deck started out and how it ended up.

not really since we are a small group that means there really is only a few coresets in the group. so id have to get everyone's shocking transformation or whatever. and its only been me and the one player mostly doing the trades, the other guy hasnt been interested much. but on the plus side once you lose to everyone you get the extra pack (which we call the pity pack) so we do get that benefit of extra asylum packs.

so it does balance out some what. but all our decks have too many one ofs to make them anything more than luck based. the one trick me and the yog player has is having servant for out of time so we can gathering stone or unspeakable resurrection something we had to resource early in the game thats a 1x. i have a bit more luck since i have hdy to help if its a cheap character. even still its not the most dependable tactic.

but i do think leagues is a fun format, i actually like it alot. we are already planning to play league format of sorts after we're done until all the asylum packs come out. i just dont like the prize part for such a luck based game, thats my only complaint, and it is kinda big. but the game is fun, and that is what im playing for more so than prizes.

Here in Dayton Ohio at Bell,Book & Comics we have 8 participants in our 1st league.

We expect to increase that number by at least 2 players for the next league in May.

We are currently in our 5th week and I must say that I'm thrilled with the enthusiasum

and sportsmanship! A Shub/Hastur deck is dominating followed by, surprise surprise

a Hastur/Shub deck and in third a tricky Cthulhu/M.U. deck. In the end, after well over 100 official

league matches have been played, not a single card has been traded between opponents!

It's problematic that the human factions seem to be doing so poorly and Shub is so dominant.

Initially we had trouble getting 'Spawn of the Sleeper' in the store and consequently delayed the

start of league play by a week. A phone call to FFGs got everything cleared up.

I'm guessing because of the timing of Bromens' departure the League kit

got to us very late and I'm less than satisfied with the quality of it's contents.

The store owner and I are throwing in alot of cool stuff to make the prizes worthwhile.

Overall the league format has attracted players to the game that would not have otherwise

invested in a Core Set and 4+ APs.

We've got two Agency decks (one MU and one Syndicate) and they are absolutely dominating the rest of the Monster decks. Shub is a very popular support faction choice all around, but the Agency player just can't lose with that insanely powerful 3-currency ability.

Excuse me for replying these late !

Well, I kinda agree Hybrid point on the value for the prizes. I'll manage to do some more !

And exchange are hard during the league : The players just bought 1 CS and 1 copy of each AP. They did exchange some stuffs but will exchange it back later. So they can keep their collection.

Spending currencies is really optionnal in our contest and I must admit I kept my every points sonrojado.gif .

Happy to see that Shubb is also the main-sidekick for a lot of decks, in other countries too. It's the only faction which kept this level of efficience !
