Does this last the whole game? Someone tried to tell me it only lasts until you take damage from it. Then you discard it?

Yes, it lasts the whole game. Everytime you overlap another ship at the end of your movement, you take a damage. You don't discard the card and it does count as a damage card itself. Moral of the story, don't overlap things once you have that card.
