On the brink, purchasing rune bound

By reddaza, in Runebound

Hi all finally thought id post on the forums to get the advice of runebound players. Im on the brink of purchasing with several card expansions but need to know if this game is going to scratch the itch that im hoping it will.

To sum it up im looking for a game that is talisman like in nature, simple to pick up but with a bit more investment in strategy especially combat. Basically a good game for maybe 2 to max four players who like a few beers and laughing at each others misfortunes, I think runebound has the right mixture but id appreciate some seasoned players feedback.

For example my gamming group like descent but when having a "booze boardgame" weekend they much prefer doom as its less fiddly or dare i say talisman, as its a every man for them self.

Cheers!

Sounds about right to me. Martin designed the system to be a replacement for Talisman. He and his group are not know for sobriety. This all adds up nicely.

Yea haha i figured so thats why even though runebound seems more like a solo multiplayer board game the "verbal comments" we normally give each other during a gaming session will more than make up for any lack of onboard player interaction. We did consider descent as well which looks like a awesome game but it just doesnt seem to fill the "advanced talismin" Kinda play we are looking for.

Descent is awesome, but it is also a different type of game. You're looking for an adventure board game and there are a lot out there but Runebound is one of the best.

Thanks for the input slev, i think ive already made up my mind to get runebound just needed to hear anothers opinion based on what type of gaming experience im looking for. Also it seems to play well with small groups of players which is a bonus (we have enough large group games) just wanted something we could quickly set up and get into with a small group and this seems to fill the role!

I'd recomend downloading & prnting a set of play-mats, they tend to be helpful for newbies. Boardgamegeek has a huge raft of different ones. I find this one to be the best: www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/13323 .

Also consider a few extra D10's. Movement dice are easy to track, the D10's seem to vanish constantly...

Runebound really is my favorite FF board game. I just finished playing my first Talisman game today and I really do like Talisman but so far Runebound is still my champ.

There is much more strategy and variety to combat in Runebound than in Talisman. And movement in Runebound is also much more interesting. I love the terrain movement dice!

Runebound is a bit more complex but it sound like this is what you need to satify that itch of yours.

I'd consider all the deck expansions that add to the core game a must have. Items, Encounters, Allies, etc. They will give a huge amount of variety and keep the game fresh.

I also really like that Sand's box expansion and all of the deck expansions that change the end game senario.

Well purchased it yesterday hehe and had a couple of solo games to hammer the rules into my head. First impressions... i actually really enjoyed playing it solo to my suprise! Then had one three player game which everyone picked up very quickly and enjoyed immensly first time round (normally takes a couple of play throughs for new games to get a feel if we are going to like it)

Ive played a few board games over the years, (Doom, Talisman, Descent, tide of iron, wow the boardgame etc) But initially this seems to be one of the best ive tried! Perfect for the gamer that wants a lite adventure game thats fun easy to teach and not to much rule checking. It does play like a advanced talisman of sorts just more strategy and not as much randomness.

Thanks for the input all!

Actually upon more reading i think getting a majority of the card expansions for the base game is a good idea and than later on aquire a big box expansion for alternate gaming sessions. Still cant get over how they dont implement the non market card expansions into the big box expansions...

Hi. Try Character deck. It's very interesting for interaction between players.

Good game.

Yea i am kinda curious about the character decks but at the moment i will collect the rest of the card expansions first as im trying to ease most of my non gaming friends into it, and its working so far haha! I do have one question do the character decks work effectively with the big box expansions as well? Also what number of players make best use of the character decks as i know they add alot more player interaction.
