Need some advice from those who have played.

By Thisnme, in X-Wing

I know this topic has been out there before and I am sorry but right now don't have time to look up in search.

I currently own 1 starter box and one of each Y-Wing, TIE Advanced, B-Wing, and TIE Bomber. I am wanting to get enough to play with at least each ship, to make a decent battle on both sides. My question is, what should I get multiples of? I was thinking of getting another starter box and then 1 extra X-Wing and 2 extra TIE Fighters, just to have 3 on 6. Past that, I don't know if 2 Y-Wings are enough or if I should go with more or how many A-Wings I should look at.

I have a friend that has a nice little collection so I'm not worried about the group of guys I play with to be left out but I do have other friends that might play as well and I don't want to feel like I'm missing something for the battles. Not looking at to large of scale but have enough to do some mid scale size stuff.

Thanks for the help.

Grabbing an extra core set is always a good thing. There are a lot of threads that say when staring out 2 core sets plus an extra tie fighter expansion and x-wing expansion lets you field some fun builds. Not sure where you are located but here in Michigan, target has core sets on clearance for $20ea right now. Plus the core sets give you all the extra dice and tokens and maneuver templates to play with your friends that don't have the game.

Agree on the 2nd core set. That gives you 3 more ships, and another set of dice...cheaper than if you were to buy them separately. Also gives you backup movement templates, range ruler, and more than enough focus/evade/TL tokens you'll ever need.

X-Wing expansion will get you Wedge

TIE expansion will get you Hownrunner

I doubt you'll ever need more than 1 Advanced (for Darth and Squad Leader)

if you don't plan on getting Imp Aces, you may want more A wings so you can get more copies of PTL.

It really comes down to how you wanna play, and if you are partial to one faction over the other.

Second core set is always handy - make sure to keep the two damage decks separate though.

X-Wings and B-Wings are probably the best starter ships for the Rebels, along with the Falcon. The X-Wing is just a solid, all around ship. The B-Wings are tremendous because they have 8 hit points, 5 of which are crit-immune shields. Their dial takes a while to master, but the ruggedness and firepower are pretty forgiving for new players while learning to use them.

They're my favorite ship because they have all kinds of movement shenanigans with their barrel roll, and with Advanced Sensors, if you wind up with Shuttles later on. Fire Control Systems is a solid #2 choice. They can mount Heavy Laser Cannons or Ion Cannons (stay away from Autoblaster ;).

Basically, they're easy to pick up and play. The high hit points will forgive a lot of rookie mistakes, but the tricky dial and the lateral moves they can pull off mean that you get more and more out of them the longer you play them.

The Falcon (YT) is probably the best big ship in the game, and is nice because if you have one Falcon and 2 of basically anything else, you have the basis for a number of competitive squads. You can flank it with B-Wings, X-Wings, Y-Wings, I've seen it with A-Wings and even HWKs.

On top of the 2nd core set, which is always useful.

The YT-1200 or Firespray offers a huge number of options in list building, so I'd highly recommend one or both of those depending on which faction you play.

I can speak less confidently to Imperial lists, but for a new player I agree the YT and the Firespray, depending which faction you're going for, can both anchor a ton of good squads. I'm not knocking the shuttle - it can be used to great effect and comes with one of the best upgrades in the entire game (Advanced Sensors), but it's a lot less forgiving for new players.

Take the Firespray with a couple of Interceptors or a mini-swarm of TIEs, or the YT with two of anything flanking it, and you immediately have some solid, competitive, FUN lists that are very forgiving for new players. When I say competitive I mean you see them show up at all levels of competition because there are a lot of good, solid lists built around those parts... But at the same time they're easy to pick up and play without getting blown out learning the hard way how to build a good squad.

In my opinion, a good all-encompassing starter fleet looks something like this:

3 X-wings (2 core + expansion)

2 B-wings

1-2 Y-wings

1 Falcon

1-2 A-wings

1 HWK-290

5-6 TIE Fighters (2 core + 1 or 2 expansions)

1 TIE advanced

1-2 TIE Bombers

2 TIE Interceptors

1-2 Firesprays

1 Shuttle

it's kind of a lot of ships for a "starter" fleet but if you plan to really dive in and want logical numbers of everything, this is pretty much it. From here you should be able to get a good idea of what you like and then can expand further as you desire with a good idea of what will actually be worth it for you to buy more of.

Thanks everyone. Effenhoog, that looks like a pretty good start. I think that is what I was thinking but before I spend almost 200$ I just wanted to be sure that I got enough to play the game and get a good idea of what I want next.

You can play the game at 35 points right out of the starter pack.

Effenhoog, that looks like a pretty good start.

That is a good place to start if you plan on playing both sides. If you don't, pick a faction and what Effenhoog said still works, but you can get buy a bit cheaper.

Two starters and a Falcon or Firespray is an EXCELLENT place to start.

You can field 100 points and a legitimate, very solid squad right off the bat, either faction.

It seems like this question gets asked at least once a week. The answers are always the same.

And I'm happy to answer it over and over again, because it means that at least once a week new players are joining the fold. That's a good thing.

Yep, I agree with that. Personally I'd prioritise Y-Wings over A-Wings and B-Wings, and Firesprays over the rat of the Imperial stuff, but until you've used them a few times you've no way of knowing what you'll prefer. Myself I've got four of all the small ships except the Tie Advanced and the HWK (two of each), 6 Tie Fighters (four from core sets) and two of every big ship. All I've ever found myself wanting is a third Firespray (not important unless you love Firesprays, which I do mostly because they look cool).
