Regionals?

By ryan.krippendorf, in X-Wing

So I just read through the Regional posting. I have mixed feelings about the changes in the tournament format. With only two regionals per region I don't see some states that had five regionals getting even one event. For example, Wisconsin. FFG will most likely host one so that leaves only one other. Chances are that it will go to Iowa. I guess my con is that I'm not a fan of how the regions are set up. You can make the argument that we are close enough to a different region and wi peeps should go to those. So that's my complaint.

My pros, thank God it is a national bye. The cut at Worlds shouldn't be so awful. The prize support is great and deep.

Other thoughts people?

Honestly I think our region will be 1 at ffg center, and one at......Sioux Falls, maybe? I gotta believe ffg will have one at their own place. For region 4, my guesses will be Denver and Kansas City, even though Omaha has a big group. I imagine they will go by geography rather than player base size. Hopefully Chicago will get one for you guys, but I have no idea. Actually, I don't think Chicago gets one because its on the edge of the region. Most likely for that region you're looking at Indy and maybe Virginia

I'm guessing that Virginia and Maryland, even though they are in different regions, will not both get a regional. So, maybe we go Virginia and Indy, like Hothie said, and north of us will be... Boston and Pennsylvania? I'm not sure what the scene is like in New England. Or Maryland gets one and you get two out there in Ohio maybe, and somewhere further west.

I trust that FFG will make it so that you won't have to drive more than 4-6 hours or so to get to a regional. If you want to make it to a second regional, though, it'll probably be a long drive or a flight.

What you have to remember, is that this year's Regionals are essentially a new event. What we had last year, are now called the Store Championships. It would be nice to add another level, States, next year. But as it is, I am fine with the new Regionals, making a very tough tournament.

Still have issues with the LCG kits seeming cooler thanks to playmats though...

Yeah, when I looked at the map, I figured Indianapolis and Richmond would get tournaments for Region 7. People in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky are used to driving to Indy, I imagine, while people in the Virginias are not. A tournament in Richmond could serve the Washington demographic, too, without making them head up to northern New Jersey, where I'm sure there will be a Region 6 tournament.

I'd like to do two again. For me regionals and FFG center events are weekends I get to hangout with my Cuz, and see people I talk to online but would love to game with all the time. I am concerned about the cost.

After looking at the map again, here are my guesses for where regionals will be held. I am going more by geographical location than by player base size. And these are all just guesses. I have no idea where they will actually be held.

1-Portland, Boise

2-LA, Reno

3-Minneapolis (ffg event center), Sioux Falls

4-Denver, KC

5-El Paso, Dallas (yes, I know they're in the same state, but they're far enough apart to cover different areas of the region.)

6-Philadelphia, Boston

7-Indianapolis, Norfolk

8-Atlanta, Orlando

This is assuming stores in those locations submit applications.

I'm curious how they are doing the international regions, specifically Canada.

I asked FFG directly if they would be 1 of the two venues hosting in region 3. They said yes.

You think near LA? SCORE!

Your guess is as good as mine at this stage. Applications are due in a few weeks.Give a few more weeks for processing and decision making, and I'm guessing we will hear in early March where and when they will be.

I'm hoping Baltimore, MD (games and stuff) and fingers crossed for Chantilly, VA ( game parlor) or Richmond, va (ftw games).

There are still plenty of stores that haven't heard back regarding store champs yet. I'd be surprised to hear about regionals until late march at the earliest.

We'll have to wait to see how things actually work out, but my guess is fewer players will be attending more than one regional, and given the size of the regions, many players may not even make one.

New England had four last year. If this were a region with just two, that wouldn't be a big hardship for travel. But with the size of this year's Northeast region, I don't expect much crossover between a southern and northern regional. Travel time and expense may cut a lot of players out of either one.

I'm curious how they are doing the international regions, specifically Canada.

i was talking to an x-wing friend who also has his own store, he was telling me there are only 5 regionals kits to give away in Canada, and considering how spread out the west half of Canada is between cities.. it's going to make things really difficult for me on the west coast if we don't get one in Vancouver/Victoria.. edmonton/calgary AB are the next closest Major cities that can host something of this caliber and it's not a short drive (14ish hours), it's a flight

which means i would most likely be travelling internationally to the US and most likely either to the WA or OR states

which isn't a big deal for me as i've done it a few times before but there are lots of people that don't drive, let alone have vehicles for travel so the turn outs might not be as good

I for one love the change to the Regionals, makes them more prestigious. I am a little confused about the timing of the applications having to be submitted so early. I thought I had read that in order to be considered for a Regional your store/venue had to host a Store Championship first.

I can see the events being awarded based on location but it would be interesting if they did it based on Store Championship attendance and area player base. I'm in TN, Region 8, and if Hothie's guess is correct I'd actually be a little bummed if Atlanta got one. I know one player who attended a Regional there last year and there was only 8 players and the store was more concerned about a Magic tourney the same day. I attended another one in the Atlanta area and there were only 10 players (8 or which weren't from the Atl. area) and the store seemed to care less if we were even there (they didn't even time the matches).

Contrast that with the TN, upstate SC area where we just had a 18 man tournament, and upcoming Store Championships where we'll have 20+ and 25_+ in attendance each. (Greeneville, SC and Kingsport, TN)

I'm in Canada so I can only hope one would be closer by, don't think I'll spend crap load of money to go to the states but if there was one in Halifax is be there

I'm kind of new to this site but does anyone have a link where they post where tournament at?

you're guess is as good as mine, dude

sorry i'm of no help

best thing i'd recommend is to keep your eyes peeled, especially on the general forum of this site

i'm sure once the locations are posted somebody will be all over it and it will be a top of the page post for a good length of time
