Silly question about Critical and Healing

By azato, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Lets suppose a Wookie gets hit by a Nexu and take 3 points of damage and one critical - At the Brink (91-95) That is a Hard severity.

Does the healing of the critical occur separately from the healing of the wound damage? I assume to get the Critical off her character, the wookie needs to have a specific medical roll against the critical. (vs Hard)

Yes, Criticals need to be healed separately from Wounds.

Yep. That's how it works. Someone will post more detail, I'm sure, but you test against criticals and against wounds separately. Worth noting is that if the test is failed, an attempt to heal a Critical Injury cannot be repeated for a week whereas an attempt to heal wounds can be made every encounter.

I would add that a critical - even one that lasts for a round has to be healed, and will until it is healed provide a much un-needed +10 to the next critical dice roll.

Thanks!

Everyone is correct with one exception. A triumph on a medicine check used to heal wounds can be spent to heal one critical wound.

This is incorrect.

You can heal one additional critical injury on a triumph when rolling to heal a critical injury and you can roll to heal a crit once a week.

Interesting. I've read the healing rules several times and recently, and I read that you can spend the triumph to heal a critical injury while healing wounds. I even double checked that just a few days ago (I've been playing a doctor in another group).

Actually page 113 CRB states "Triumph generated on a Medicine check to heal a Critical Injury may also heal additional wounds, or vise versa. So yes, you can heal a Critical Injury on a Medicine check to heal wounds with a Triumph.

Okay... I do find it weird that something that crucial is only mentioned in the skills section and not in the actually healing and recovery section, but so be it. It also seems a bit strong to be honest... You can roll to aleviate a critical only once a week but can do medicine check plenty of times during that period. I feel that "or vice versa" is just weird in a sentence like this and playing it out to the word takes away a lot of the strength of a critical. But I stand corrected and would allow my players to use it if they want to.

That's going to make criticals even more trivial for a group that has someone with a high level of Medicine.

It is strange that it is on that section and not the actual part about healing for sure, and at first I thought it would also be a bit too much. However having a player with a crippled leg for three sessions and the Doctor failed the check for about two weeks was really taking the fun out for him and I see why. It can be a HUGE relief if they have some of those nastier criticals and the Medicine check gets botched. But I've realized in my game at least that I can get so many criticals off in an encounter that it isn't even funny, so it seems to balance itself out well. Doctor for my players rolls YYYG and has actually only been able to Triumph a check like that 2-3 times.

Well I'll try and find out soon! Let's crit my players some more! :)

Hah, take off the gloves and start throwing around some Crits. A Medicine check isn't going to help a missing limb much though :)

Grab the limb, squirt some bacta on the wound, stick it back on. Better med kits will also have a stapler.

The repair rules for ships seem a bit vague, especially when it comes to critis.

Yup, you're still changing your name to 'Lefty', regardless.....

A limb can be re-attached hours after being severed. And with SW medical technology I imagine that it could be done a lot easier than with modern tools and methods. Of course, it does depend on how it was removed...

Yeah. A limb removed by a mono-molecular edged vibroknife is going to go back on a lot more easily than one bludgeoned off by brass knuckles (to use the most extreme examples).

All it takes is one triumph that was incidentally rolled to heal some other wounds...
