6 player tournament report from last night (Rebel)

By Eruletho, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I played in a tourney last night, and took top spot with a list I posted yesterday in one of the general forum threads:

Jan Ors (25)

-Ion Cannon Turret (5)

-Chewbacca (4)

Ibitsam (28)

-Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

-Advanced Sensors (3)

-Elusiveness (2)

Garven Dreis (26)

The idea was for Garven to lead the way, taking the heat early on and giving his focus to Ibit. Jan would move alongside at first, then fly lazy speed-1 circles to keep her stress-free for Ibit's attack each round. ibitsam would always roll 5 dice, normally focused and sometimes target-locked or stress-rerollable. This would result in (hopefully) 4+ hits per round.

Round 1: Mixed Imperial Swarm

I can't remember the exact squad, but it had the PS2 Advanced with a Cluster Missile, the PS4 Bomber with 2x Assault Missile and a Seismic Charge, Night Beast and a couple Academy Pilots.

I set up in the bottom right corner after he made a skirmish line across his back line. Moving up slowly, I ended up getting centered on by his entire squad, but it quickly turned to my favor. I aced one of the TIE's right away, and took a tiny bit of splash damage one assault missile shot. The HLC range 3 shot with 5 dice was devestating all game. After a rounds 3-7 cluster of crashes, I had Jan and Ibit left to chase down one academy and the bomber. Jan got down to a final hit point before I had to Chewbacca her, and she survived to finish the fighter while Ibitsam deald 5 damage to a 5 health bomber that rolled no evades for the game.

Round 2: Firespray Fire Team

Bounty Hunter w/ HLC and Stealth

Soontir w/ PTL

Turr w/ Expert Handling

I set up in a corner again, and he set up in the opposite corner. We both flew straight at the opposing edge of the board the first few turns, except for Jan, who angled toward the center to attract attention and get in turret range. Turn 3 saw Turr and Soontir get R3 shots at Jan, stripping her to 2 hull left, but turn 4 saw the death of Soontir to 5 dice of HLC stupidity and Turr take an ion shot that left him pointing the wrong way. The BH was still out of range at that point, but the following turn it swung in and shot at Garven, after Jan plinked the stealth device off and gave him an ion token and the others finished Turr. The next round, the BH bumped Jan, moving him back and sticking him on a rock. Garven bumped the BH, but Ibitsam got a R1 5dice shot off and Jan ion'd the BH again. The next turn his straight 1 put him on another rock, where Jan, a K-turned Garven, and a K-turned Ibitsam put him down. No losses on my side.

Round 3: Stealthy Interceptors

Soontir w/ PTL and Stealth

2x Avenger w/ Stealth

Alpha w/ Stealth

I moved up in my slow brick again, angling for the first shots at round 3. Soontir flew way faster than I thought he would, out-stripping his wingmates and going for a t2 shot instead (just out of range.) He then flew down out of Garven and Ibit's firing arcs, so he and Jan had a shootout where Jan lost her shield and a hull and dealt no damage in return. Ibit's 5 dice stripped 2 hull off the Alpha after Garven whiffed against him, and the Int's dealt some damage to Garven. Next round saw the Alpha hit a rock, Garven fly over an Avenger and end up point blank with the next one, and Soontir swing around for a shot on Ibit while Jan turned toward where the other TIEs were earlier. Soontir slammed ibit for 3 shields, Jan missed against Soontir again, Garven plinked the stealth off of his target, and Ibit aced the other Avenger. Garven died to the remaining Avenger. Next turn, the Alpha nearly bumped Soontir, Ibit 2k'd after a barrel roll to dodge a rock, Ibit continued her circuit, and Soontir bumped Ibit. Soontir dealt another damage to Jan, who finally plinked the stealth off Soontir, while Ibit cleaned up the Alpha and the Avenger dealt another shield of damage to Ibit. The Avenger swung around to face Ibit, who bumped Soontir, while Jan finished her circle and was now pointed at the others and Soontir bumped again (I think... details got hazy here as it was late.) Soontir whiffed, Jan whiffed, but Ibit finished off Soontir and the Avenger dealt another damage to Ibit. The Avenger got tricky next round, moving around so that it was right in front of Ibit but off to the side, facing where Ibit had to move toward. Ibit barrel rolled behind the Avenger, then K-turned and ended up nearly nose to nose with him, before blasting him with 5 dice and ending the game.

All told, I had NO IDEA that this squad would do so well against these match ups. Each squad had at least one interceptor, which I figured would be the death of me, but the 5 dice, normally focused and often target locked resulted in 5 hits close to 10 times (at least 7 times for sure.) I only lost one ship in two of my three games (Garven, who was designed to take the heat so the brunt of the combo continues to work into the late game) and skunked the third.

Nicely done. Sounds like it was a fun evening. Ibti can be a beast with Jan support. Those ladies are not to be trifled with. :)

Thanks for the writeup.

FYI, You need two Ion tokens to Ionize the Big Ships. Nice report, well worth the read.

I really enjoyed this report. Thanks for posting it.

The good news is that your first Ion Token doesn't go away until the Ion effect happens (in the Large Ship rules)

Congratulations on the win.

Now I don't mean to make excuses or diminish you wins but some of the squads faced could have been put together better and it seems like people may not have known how to take you apart. That first squad seems a few points short and probably could have been put together better. In the second squad I have no issue with a Firespray and two Interceptors but Stealth Device on the Firespray instead of an Interceptor seems crazy, and I'm not sure what Turr would be doing with Elusiveness which would kill his pilot ability and could NOT be used in place of it. The last squad you faces looks well put together

3 (small) ship rebel builds can be done, but you can't make many mistakes and need a little luck usually as well.

I faced a very similar squad to yours a few weeks ago on vassal. I think the only difference was they had biggs instead of garvin.

They got a few strong attacks with the bwing that almost took down my firespray but my numbers took him down and I think I maybe lost 1 ship at most. I was running krassis with hlc and recon, 3 academy ties, and an alpha interceptor.

Yep, I hit the big guy two rounds in a row with Jan, which caused the 1-straight to happen right as he was trying to get off a rock.

Congratulations on the win.

I agree, most of the squads weren't super-competitve. I think the first squad I faced had an Alpha interceptor instead of one of the academy pilots I mentioned, but I can't remember for sure. I also asked the Firespray guy why he put the stealth device on the firespray, he said he wanted to have all three the same agility.

Overall it was a great night. The other two squads were Han, 1 rookie with R2-D2, and 1 rookie with something else; and 2 red squadron pilots with R2 astromechs and 2 dagger squadron pilots with FCS. I wanted to face one of those, but the system kept giving us Rebel vs Imp matches so I didn't get a chance. The overall breakdown at the end of the night was:

1st: Jan, Garven, Ibitsam (300 killed to 52 lost, 3-0)

2nd: Soontir, 2xAvenger, Alpha (226 killed to 18~ lost, 2-1)

3rd: Night Beast, Bomber, Advanced, TIE, Interceptor (200 killed to 200 lost, 2-1)

4th: 2x Red, 2x Dagger (around 18~ killed and 25~ lost, 1-2)

5th: Han, 2x Rookie (same as 4th, 1-2)

6th: Soontir, Turr, Firespray (less than 150 killed to 300 lost, 0-3)

Sorry but a clarification. The 18~ means something between 180 and 190 or what many of use may call 180ish or ~180. It maybe an uncertain number but I think we still expect to see the right number of digits (or maybe a #) in a number.

It is sometimes interesting hearing why people are playing what they are and how they came to their list. I guess I can almost see the desire for all of your ships to have the same agility so I guess there is room to grow. Maybe a Firespray isn't the worst thing to but a Stealth Device on but could you imagine that reasoning behind putting it on Y-Wings so they could "match up" with the X-Wings or HWKs in the same squad.

Looking at the overalls I'm a little bit amazed that the Mixed TIE swarm did as well as it did and that the Firespray plus two Interceptors did so poorly. Then again if all the matchups were Imperial vs. Rebel I can almost see it. Let's see, Imperials record 4 wins/5 loses; Rebel record 5 wins/4 loses. It looks like you really bucked the system with three wins all against fleets with more, or at least bigger, ships.
