I think the pick & pluck foam trays are optimal for storing these non-standard shaped miniatures, and god knows there's quite a good chunk of them in this game, but I don't think it's optimal for storing a large amount of standard 1x1 miniatures. I would think a pre-cut standard foam for standard mini size would store a lot more than its pluck counterpart. The one I´ve been looking into buying stores 37 miniatures in standing position. That covers a good part of my collection, and they are inexpensive in comparison.

Probably a good point. Which standard 1x1 trays are you looking at? Feldher?

I can recommend the Feldherr foam. It is pricy for sure, but in order to protect painted minis, it is great.

They sell a wide variety of foam inlets which fit into game boxes and I found the one for Zombicide quite usefull for standard minis (Size of Human Hero like Leoric). But be aware that the card used in that game have a different size than those of Descent, so you need a cutter to make 'em fit

I got some foam from them last week and it turned out exactly like I predicted.

I´m no foam expert and basically nothing else similar to compare with that in my possession, but I´m more than happy with the quality of that foam, and the storage solution that comes with it. It's currently sitting on top of my wardrobe in two boxes. Now if I could get hold of foam blocks myself I would have cut it myself (this being said I think it's easy to say, cutting foam might be tricky) but there´s none in my area so at least the decision was easy.

However, I had to keep a big expansion box for maybe 50% of the large monsters, and then bear in mind a good % of all 1x1 miniatures are quite large and do not fit in these standing 1x1 foam trays.

Now bear in mind I am not pendantic for this kind of thing and I threw the minis in these trays just to store them and use the trays to their maximum capacity. Now if you´ve got requirements about not mixing heroes and monsters, storing by archetype or expansion etc. or not having two monsters in the same foam cell, or having all large monsters in that solution then you´ll have to buy a lot more trays than I did, and it will have a lot of usused foam cells. I think this solution is only functional for the people like me. The ultra pedantic should probably design a custom solution, get their foam material and cut it themselves.

I got some foam once and tried to cut an inlet myself. So here is some advice:

Do NOT get a block of foam and try to cut the holes yourself. I tried it with a razor sharp knife, but you don't get straight cuts. Its a mess. Simply a mess. I would rather recommend to get a fairly thin, but not too thin foam mat (5 mm would be good), and assemble your own inlet by cutting individual stripes and gluing them together. Still, you need the foam, the glue and invest some time. I doubt that you'd save a lot of money.

The rasterized foam offered by Feldherr seems much better for large monsters, and not too pricy. But I don't have any experience with it.

Got some game plus foam trays. I really like them but I need to glue some foam back together....which glue to use? I have Elmer's, paper glue, super glue and gorilla glue. Does it matter?

Once I complete my trays/storage I'll post some picks.
