That usually comes down to a matter of what is it worth to you to "protect" them? I actually have a friend that painted all of his minis (from all of his games). He goes to the expense of having laser-cut custom foam made for all of them. As you can imagine, this ends up costing a great deal of money.

He doesn't care, as he is fortunate to have much of it, and he feels that the time he spent painting the things to begin with makes it worth it.

There are customizable foam sheets that you should be able to find at any FLGS with a decent selection of miniatures games. Something like this is what I'm thinking of:

The problem I have with these pics is that the boxes themselves are freaking ugly and difficult to store, at least for people like me who don't have a gaming room or a dedicated place to put everything in. I have normal book shelves and that's it. I also travel a lot (by train) and cannot carry huge boxes of that size with me. The price tag is probably something too, but I admit that I haven't checked.

My current storage solution is far from optimal, but the point is to use the original game boxes to the best of their capability. The plus is that any of these boxes looks way better and is much easier to store (as per my personal situation). So this is what I have inside the boxes.

I split everything in two, first the "active" components, which is what I´m currently using for the upcoming sessions and what I'm actually carrying with me, secondly the stuff that stays at home. The reason is that I want to limit space and weight for travelling reasons. So yeah, I do this job of extracting the material I need while setting up the next sessions, with the help of a tracking sheet to make sure nothing is forgotten. Works well so far.

- Trollfens box (small size): This is where I store all of the cards/tokens components I need for the next session, all in zip plastic bags. We turn the lock of the box upside down on the table and put all the tokens in piles. Decks are ready so setup takes no time.

- LoR box (medium size): Here go all the booklets, the tiles and the monsters I need (not on the picture) wrapped in tissue ton avoid friction. I put all the tiles together for a given encounter, so setting up the map takes no time.

Now only used for storage (these boxes never move and stay on a shelf at home)

- Base Game box: This is where I have all the tiles and terrain objects, all in zip plastic bags for sorting purpose. The bigger tiles are on their own at the bottom of the box, sorted numerically too. I find this very practical and there is a lot of space left for new tiles.

- LoW box (small): Where all the unused cards go. Note the Rumor cards are there

- SoN box (medium size): the rest of the unused components and the other million of threat tokens.

It looks messy on the pictures, but the plastic bag solution is in fact extremely practical as it virtually removed the need to have compartiments for the components. Bluntly put, do your sorting with the help of these bags, and throw everything into a box or two and you're set. Then yeah sure, the "players tray" posted above is really nice and tidy, it's just that I can't travel with that.

- So where are the minis? Yeah, cause they don't fit basically. Actually they do, but then the boxes would explode. So I just have two separate boxes containing the miniatures (I have many of them painted now), with all minis standing except a few who are just too tall. When we have a session coming our way I pre-select the monsters like any OL would do and just move what I need to the LoR box.

I also have a closet in there where the 7771s fit perfectly on one of the shelves. It's like the shelf was made for them. I still keep the regular game boxes on a display shelf because they look so nice.

Well thank you! I wouldn't call myself talented or anything as I really struggled doing these with virtually no time to spend for it, but I would say that any painting job is better than the original colors. Heck, I have a friend who just put a layer of black paint with gloss shade over every tan monster and it looks twice better than the original

Yeah, I was also aware of that, but it's tough to get hold of the foam trays without having to buy the bag as well. The trays alone are on the catalogue but it seems like most retailers only import the transport bag, even empty sometimes.

I was thinking naively that foam trays could potentially be found in building stores or something, but it doesn't look like the material is used anywhere else than transport (I was thinking isolation jobs).

One place you might look is locations that sell window air conditioners. Many of them also sell thick gray/black foam that can be used to stuff around the air conditioner that sits within a window. Some sell it in sheets, some sell it in narrow strips.

You might be able to utilize something like this and an exacto knife to cut out sections within which you can store your minis. Just a thought.

Or you sure they dont sell the trays individualy? I got around 40-50 trays (if not more) and only 2 bags, my shop at least sold them indivdually. But he cloesed a month ago, so i am not awere where it could be bought. I try ask the retailers, one of the points of sabol is, as you say to buy the bag empty so you can get exactly what you want.

It just hit me, battlefoam might also be worth a look, pretty sure they also sell trays individually, though I dont think they have pluck foam, but standard tabletop sized trays should hold everything except 4x4 sixed creatures or bigger.

I'm thinking about buying the Plano 7771.

My only worry is if all the small cards can fit well in one of the boxes?

I currently use a Plano 3630 for the small cards which is perfect for them.

I just bought my Plano 7771 and OH MY GOD IS THIS AMAZING. I actually keep all my cards (except for the lieutenant packs) in a simple white cardboard deckbox that fits PERFECTLY in the right side compartment. The lieutenant card packs are all in their individual bags along with the 16 threat that comes with them and I put those in the upper right container.

This thing is truly just the best box for holding Descent. Thank you a million times over guys for pointing this thing out.

Note: I own everything from 2nd edition and NONE of first edition and I have and incredible amount of room to grow in this thing. It's going to take at least 3-5 more expansions to top this out. I also don't paint my minis, so I'm cool with stuffing all the large ones in the top storage area, and I'm not really worrried about the box flipping over and the pieces getting damaged, especially with the tough plastic the large figures out made of. Maybe merriods or bane spiders are the only figures that might get tweaked, but that's only if I were to shake this thing for no reason or throw it off the roof (and I still think it would hold). It doesn't hold the map tiles though. I keep those in the main descent box, bagged in groups of 10.

Setup and cleanup time is sooooooo much faster and easier now. It was a bit of a spend at 70 bucks, but at the amount I play the game, and the amount of time saved with setup/cleanup I feel it's already worth it. Also most importantly... it's portable now! I used to not be able to bring the game to anyone else's house due to hauling all the boxes and then cleaning it all back up and getting it back in the boxes... especially when a session would end at 1 AM...

ArtBin 6980AB Super Satchel Deluxes stack well and have a nice handle for carrying, and are relatively cheap ($26 on Amazon). They have a undivided top section for maps, rules, etc. and plenty of room for minis. I have two of them containing the 1st and 2nd Edition plus all 2E expansions:

Wow! That thing is WAY bigger than it looked on the Amazon listing. VERY nice.

Yeah, I can fit most of the large miniatures inside any of the 4 x 4 bottom dividers. The only exception is the Demon Lords and Crypt Dragons from the First Edition and the Lieutenant Valyndra. I had to take out a section divider for those (in the other ArtBin Super Satchel case not pictured.

The cases have handy handles so you can carry like a suitcase. My only complaint is that the tops sometimes get misaligned, especially if you end up stuffing them to the brim with map tiles and rules (I eventually had to move the rules to a separate box). This still carries a ton of stuff though and isn't that bulky and is easy to stack. If you have a lot of expansions, you'll probably end up needing two eventually, but one should contain everything from the base second edition plus multiple expansions fine.

Quick question concerning the Plano 7771.

I just bought one today but noticed that the four smaller boxes which are included have solid plastic going through the rows. The dividers that I have can only be placed vertically. I've seen that some of you were able to fit in the smaller cards (classes, items, etc.) Did you need to modify the boxes yourselves?

btw, the model for the four small boxes (in my case) are the 3701

Yeah, i cut the long row walls out of a couple of mine. I used a razor blade for most of it, then a dremel to smooth it out and even it up a bit. Now, i didn't put cards in mine, so maybe others can pipe up on exactly what they did for that.

Is there room enough to place an extra plano box in the top compartment of the 7771?

I decided to ditch the hardware box i was using to store descent and have instead started construction using foamcore inserts for the boxes.

I will then put a peice of foamcore on the bottom of some of the box's, glue on rare earth magnets to the foamcore and monsters and they will live their life also in the boxes.

I am not quite doing what this guy is doing, i keep all the expansions mixed together but you get the idea.

Man, long time no chat.. yes, sorry guys, I did use a Dremel tool as you guessed. Totally forgot about that part. Utility knife annoyed me so used the steel "high speed cutter" attachment on the Dremel, no problem. Made a horrible noise but worked really good. Was going to lay duct-tape down on the open trough in the trays or whatever but /shrug.. doesn't seem to matter.

I ended up abandoning the binder idea for the tiles. The binders are so goofy to handle, and I was going through each divider, sliding the ziploc tab down/up/down, it was still taking too long. Went with a hanging file organizer, with a single accordion/expanding file with tabbed dividers. Way faster now, just drop em in. Kept a few of the ziplocs for endcaps, join pieces and doors.

Like we are all finding out though, the 7771 is getting pretty full. Manor of Ravens & 2 more hero/monster packs coming; this is going to be interesting.

I'm visualizing two 7771's stacked as one unit, maybe a collapsible handle & wheels. Would be great to find something like that.

LOVE the hanging organizer Evilhead. If they keep releasing expansions I might try to replace one of my 7771s with something like this, as long as it has other storage (or maybe just add it). This is an excellent solution for the map tiles.

My storage solution for cards and tokens isn't much different from what others have posted but I did something a little different for the monsters. I took a couple pieces of foam board and DIY'ed my own little display case. Hero and lieutenant figures are another case and I've got a second case of monsters like this but only about half full.

The layers of foam board are held together by seamstress pins so when I get a new expansion, I just pull out the pins, take out the top board, trace the outline of the new monsters, cut them out with a scalpel and pin it all back together. It works quite well.
