Obstacle question?

By majikforce, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Newbie playing my second game. Got waxed pretty bad in my first attempt. We had a disagreement over the path a Tie fighter took through an asteroid. I read the rules as stating that if either the maneuver template overlapped an obstacle or your ship base landed on an obstacle you would have to roll for damage. My opponent interpreted it as if the path of the ships base overlapped an obstacle you would roll for damage. Which is correct? Also lets say you landed on the edge of an asteroid and took your roll and damage accordingly. On your next movement phase if the template touches any part of the asteroid would you roll for damage again? Thanks! Love this game! So much quicker than Axis and Allies!

Ok, so if EITHER your maneuver template OR your final position overlaps the asteroid, your skip your action phase for that round and you take damage. If your final position only overlaps the asteroid, you also may not attack during this firing phase. If you land on an asteroid such that your next move has the template touch the asteroid, you suffer the damage die and the loss of action again the next round. The moral of the story is, if you are going to hit an asteroid, make sure you go through it. :)

;)

P.S. Where SableGryphon says "take damage" and later "suffer the damage die", he really means that you roll an attack die and take any damage that you roll, {hit} or {crit}, per the rules.

In X-Wing a ship effectively teleports from one end of the template to the other. The space between those two points don't matter in any way, according to the rules.

The only time that space matters is when you have to backtrack down the template because of overlapping another ship.

So in this case, the other guy is wrong. If your template touches it, or the base at it's final spot touches it, then the effect happens. But if neither of those are true then nothing happens.

On your next movement phase if the template touches any part of the asteroid would you roll for damage again?

Yes, which really sucks if you land on a rock, because there's very good chance your template will overlap the obstacle on your next move.
