New guy - - - Hello! and a few questions...

By Hoosteen, in X-Wing

Hey guys!

I've been lurking since I got the game, and finally decided to join you all in your love of all things Star-Wars-y.
Been a Star Wars fan since I was 5, but never really played many SW board games till this one. My wife got it for me for Christmas, and, to be honest... I wasn't really excited. I glanced at it and thought "Hmmm... cool ships... but I've seen it in the store, and the extra ships are really expensive." Then I started reading the rules, and overlooked/overthought most of them, and decided that I didn't want to play.
Then she made me play it.

I am pretty sure she regrets it now, cause it's basically my favorite thing ever. I only have a small fleet at the moment, but am enjoying every minute playing, and can't wait to try to enter a few tournaments (if I can find them, and have a decent squad). I am also hoping to work up the courage to attempt a few repaints, even though my artistic skills are severely limited.

However, I have a few questions for you guys. I will make another post in the "Rules" section of the forum to ask about those, so if anyone is great with "Rule Comprehension," I welcome all and any help.

First, how long do your games normally take?

I am talking about 1v1, 100pts. Maybe it's just because my sets are pretty evenly matched, but when my wife and I play our matches normally last 2+ hours. Not that I have a problem with that, (we normally watch a few movies while playing, so that probably adds a few minutes here and there) but I can't imagine going to a tournament and spending all day playing only a few games.

And second, where do you get them?

My wife got my base from Target (then we've been back more than a few times for the core set, since they went on clearance! :D ) then a few from Hastings, then a few from Miniature Market, but what about you guys? (The closest gaming shop is about an hour and a half away from me)

Well, that's about it. Good to meet you guys! I look forward to actually chatting about stuffs instead of just lurking.

*cough*goseemyquestionsthread*endcough*

Welcome!

How many shuttles do you have?

;-)

Oh and I get most of my stuff from Amazon or Coolstuffinc. But I currently reside in Japan, so those are my best options, Miniature Market are good too I hear.

Well, game length varies a lot with the group I play, so that's hard to estimate. I guess about an hour or so usually.
As for where to get them, Local Game shops are your place to go. Most normal retailers don't carry the expansions. If you don't have one nearby, Miniature Market is a good online retailer.

Welcome to the world of X-wing!

Normally around an 1-1.5 hours. We normally manage to fit 5-6 games in a tournament day. But remember games are timed in tournaments so you won't always finish if you end up with a couple of A-Wing chasing each other round the asteroids. If this happens it goes to points killed.

If your in America Miniature Market seems very reasonable.

Nice to have you.. heading over there now.

the back of the starter box reads 30-45mins. and that's roughly 25pts a side. @100pts Mathing it out comes to about the 2hours you have..

That said the more you play and gain experience decision speed will increase and game length will decrease.

any Verbal Jousting also adds takes time. AND the Dice-gods might hate you and your opponent.. adding increases to game length.

Opened with a math reasoning... since you've been lurking you must have noticed some things result in "MATH" on occasion. ;)

I think your maths is wrong, I believe their is a curve, the more ships you have the faster ships get focused down in the early game. I've found we can play a 300-450pt game in an evening no issues (around 3 hours max)

Tournament 1v1 play is typically about an hour, so I'd say anywhere from :45 - 1:30.

Buy first from local gamestores. They'll be cheaper, and be a good place to find other folks to play with.
Other than that, I've seen them in Target and in Barnes and Nobles.

Very True game length is most likely not Linear.

As you mentioned the basic strategy of focusing fire does make taking ships off the board faster.

Bad Dice Rolls. Number of ship movements. also being Undecided for Actions. adds to game length especially if you rather be more Casual and less Competitive.

I still think my Math is Correct . Whether it's Right as an example for estimating game-length it's probably much less Correct.

My point is "Welcome, be prepared for Math. Some of us may default to it a fair bit." :D

Amazon has the expansion ships cheap a lot of times, but if you have a local shop nearby that you play at I recommend supporting them.

If you want a math formula for game length it probably should NOT be linear. What ships you play will have an effect as does your experience planning, making moves, and resolving things.

Send a couple Interceptors after a Falcon and you could have a pretty quick game. On the other had two fighters going at it one on one could take a long time if neither of them can ever get a positional advantage.

Lol. Had no idea tournaments were timed. derp. <_<

And in learning that faceup damage cards still count against your hull (again, derp), I am guessing our games will shorten significantly.

Two fighters going at it one on one could take a long time if neither of them can ever get a positional advantage.

This is the other reason our games last forever. Since there is no MASSIVE damage dealer between the ships I have (yet) that adds to a bunch of canceled dice.

 Sounds good to me.

Thanks for the welcomes, guys!

One of the things I find can really slow the game down is two ships like A-Wings hunting each other, and never being able to get a decent shot. The larger the game the less likely this is to happen. Due to the number of ships you normally have a clear winner. And as you rarely get down to 1 v 1.. something like 3 v 1 is far more common, it normally has a quite fast finish.

Yeah and Han Solo doesn't survive very long against 15 Ties.

This is also affected by the area you play on. When we run 300pt games, we use a 5~ft circular table, and it takes 3+hours

Just going to echo the welcome, this is a nice place of low hostility, remarkable given this is the internets.

Welcome soldier... are you a rebel {scum} or are you flying for the glory of the empire?

A typical game is probably 1.5 hours... after that you should be able to get a grasp on who is winning (unless there is a sup'd up interceptor named Soontir Fel or Turr Phennir on the board. All bets are off then). I would say you can get in 3 normal games in ~5 hours with set up and clean up, at least one of them is likely to be a quick lopsided endeavor if you're switching ships in between (build before you game so this takes less time).

Support your local game store with some business whenever possible but if you're going big online is the way to go (But ask your local game store if they'll price match the final cost with shipping). Less worry if it's that far away.

For some reason i have a very unusually well supplied Barnes & Noble near me that always has at least one of everything. The game and hobby shop down the street has like, one ship.

Welcome to the community!

Welcome to the game. Rehabilitation pamphlets are available at the exits.

Just going to echo the welcome, this is a nice place of low hostility, remarkable given this is the internets.

On the contrary, we're extremely hostile*. We're just civilized about it. Most of the imperial fleet are english, after all. :)

But yes, it's a nice friendly forum, and for that matter, game. I've yet to encounter any really "tournament-ey" players, even at...you know...tournaments.

Time-wise; we've had two events at my local store, both of which ran from mid-day to about five-ish, and managed four games in each, so for a 100 point game, an hour is about right (even if you find the game gets called on time some times - if you try and play to the bitter end they can go on for ever if as noted you're left with the odd A-wing or tie fighter chasing each other round and failing to get shots off)

Also; one thing to note - the difference between playing at 'round numbers' like 50 points, or at 100 points, and a slight increase (60 or 125 points) is massive - just because of the options it opens up for a relatively small increase. Whether you see that as a good thing or a bad thing I leave to you to decide.

* We're watching you, rebel scum.

Welcome to the game. Rehabilitation pamphlets are available at the exits.

Thanks... I just may need them.

The Target closest to me put them on clearance... For $12.95.

They had 6.

They have no more.

Welcome aboard. your game times are not too far off.( they will shorten as you get better with the rules and make less template mistakes) Amazon is the cheapest I have found...but I always try and buy from the local Game store whenever I can.

They have no more.

Yeah that that price it would be very hard to pass up. 3 Ships for less then 1 expansion pack would be very hard to pass up.

I keep looking at all Targets in like a 3 hour spread around here for these magical prices... no luck. Lucky you...lucky you.

:(

While that is an amazing price I just hope your zeal doesn't take away from someone else who may try getting into the game and now missed out because YOU took more product that you should need. Maybe you're supporting an entire group that plays massive battles with 300 point fleets but how does anyone really need more than three of them? Ok, at that price I guess you get the 8th TIE Fighter for the 8 ship swarm for less than the Expansion (which is where #7 should have come from anyway) but SIX of them...

So happy for you yet so disappointed in you. You are definitely on the path to the dark side.

I would recommend that you pass a couple of those along to people who might be interested in the game. Maybe even offer a trade if you can't bring youself to give them away. They buy a ship you want and they get the full core set. :) Sharing the game will grow the game and give you new people to utterly maul... er... I mean play against. :)
