A gaming club near me held a tournament on sunday called fly casual at titans wargames club in West Finchley, london.

I had attended the previous tournament there which was called stay on target as my first tournament, so I knew it would be a good crowd.

I've been to several 40k tournaments, and have gotten kinda sick of the power gaming types you see there. I've convinced myself that I don't want to be win at all costs, and would rather just have fun (this also takes away some of the pressure, though I still like to win).

As this tournament was called fly casual, the organiser printed out some t shirts for it, and I was wearing mine all day. I tried to take it to heart and be a bit forgiving with some ranges and arcs, as stuff gets knocked. I also remind my opponent of their rules and was constantly reminding people to do their actions.

First game was vs a 7 tie swarm including howl, mauler and back stabber. I managed to whittle down enough to ensure a full win, only to lose an interceptor to the last shot of the game, bringing me down to a modified win. It was my opponent's first tournament and he was a great guy, I lent him my damage deck as he didn't realize you had to have your own and had put all the damage cards from his 3 starter sets together.

Second game was vs a han shoots first list. han, luke, and 2 red squadron pilots

We danced about quite a bit and I took out his x wings while he took out my interceptors, not a fair trade at all. Loss

Third game was vs Yorr with advanced sensors and darth, 3 black squadron pilots with draw their fire and 2 academy pilots. I managed to strip the shuttle off shields and ding a few ties but spent about 4-5 turns crashing kath into all his ties. I got tabled and got no kills.

Forth game was vs kyle in a moldy crow with blaster turret (but no recon specialist), a b wing with advanced sensors, biggs with apt and r2d2 and a ps1 a wing. I managed to double stress his b wing, and while I lost kath my 2 interceptors had gotten a beautiful angle on his force while he had focused kath down. Totally tabled him

Fifth game was vs vs wedge, 2 b wings and an x wing. I think I manged to take out the x wing and both b wings were down to 1 hull each, but got tabled. I hate wedge.

Last game was vs the opponent I fought second, with the han shoots first list. I managed to take out his x wings with kath being slightly injurred and a wounded interceptor, and tried to swing them around to attack at the same time, yet totally screwed it up and lost everything for only stripping his shields.

So 2 wins, 4 losses. Really not great, however at the awards I got called up for most sporting player and won a space mat!

Organiser mentioned it was tied, so I assume that I was tied with someone who was getting a prize or something.

great report -appreciate the pics - thanx for sharing. good to see what ppl are playing at tournaments now wave3 is here. i was really interested in that lambda shuttle build - very original, i expect to see alot more shuttle squads in the near future at tournaments as players realize its actually quite good!

there was someone there who was running 4 shuttles. all with apl, 1 with darth 1 with gunner. he came 11th, while I came 25th, and 2 of my friends came 22nd and 20th.

Quite a few b wings, and tie swarms. I'd played the shuttle mini tie swarm before with my three stooges and lost to it then too. The next one there is on may the 4th, and im looking forward to it

I've also revised my list. Swapped the 2 interceptors for 3 academy pilots and howlrunner (I call it ladies in red), had 1 practice game vs wedge with 3 rookies and got spanked, though mainly due to me playing like a drunken village idiot. Though I'd like to find 5 points to give howl swarm/squad leader and stealth.

I fired the ion cannon twice during the whole day, however I managed to Ion an x wing off the board in my ladies in red practice game, which was very funny.

im just looking at the battle pic with the game of u versus that shuttle + 5 ties - looks like he chose to use his Black Squadron PIlots to protect the shuttle? was vader crew a big factor in his victory? - i think this crew card rather underrated.

Vader didn't do much tbh, his ties managed to block all my moves and slowly grind me down. I played totally rubbish but he is a decent player. He uses his black squadron pilots to spread damage around, protecting other ties or the shuttle, depending on where they are.

yeah thats what i thought - regarding the BSP/DTF combo - keeping even another tie alive for an extra turn can be game-changing. i thought it was interesting he would consider saving the shuttle with vader. imo its a fully expendable ship once u have vader on it.
