First Game

By Old Guy, in X-Wing

I had my first game yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. I did run into trouble with my Tie Swarm however, after having watched some formation flying tips on YouTube I was horrified to realise in combat my Tie's could not do a 1 soft turn, so much for training.

Despite playing havoc with my plans I won the first mission and lost the second.

I look forward to learning about Tie swarms and more games.

I hope to have a first game soon. How did you find learning and playing the rules?

Turning tight formations is tricky. With banks you need a +1 speed as you move out from the inside of the bank. For turns you need to remember to leave some space between your ships when they are facing forward; if they are too close the WILL be overlapping after attempting a hard turn.

Formation flying with Ties is my favorite part of this game so far. I recommend messing with the space between your ties. If you leav a bit of space, you can have all your units easily do the same bank maneuvers, when necessary. I also recommend sticking to hard turns AS MUCH as possible. You should mess around with everything doing the same turn, then try doing mixtures of 1 and 3 turns and see what new formations you can come up with. Then try to go that formation to another. This can all be useful when setting up your alpha strike, as you will want as many guns focus firing as possible!

And don't forget, advanced opponents expect you to do hard turns often, so mixing it up with a well planned mass bank can be great, especially if you've put that space in your formation.

I usually like a base width worth of space between ships in formation to help with maneuvering. Put your lower numbers in front to make movement easier. A swarm of four academy ties can draw fire while you swoop in on their flanks with backstabber or other skilled tie pilots.
