GM's , Yout thougts on Player Changing Carrers once AoR comes out.

Hello GM's

What are your guys thoughts on Players Changing Careers once AoR releases?

What im looking for is ideas say for A bountyhunter in our current EoE group decides they through role playing sessions and want to join the Rebellion and Become Special operations trooper or some kind.

Woudl you let tem switch to the new carrer .. locking thier existing Specialization in place and allow the new carrer to overwrite thier existing?...Remove current Carrer skill and designate new ones? and new specialization tree starting from scratch?..

im interested to hear your thoughts.

I'm not sure why they would need to change careers. They can just buy the specialization tree they want and carry on.

Understood , but does the new specialization tree cost X times as much to advance?

What if the character left the life of bounty hunting to become a full time rebel??

My main focus of my question is how would you as GM's handle or simply disallow such requests? Even if they were cleary thought out game wise, how would you deal with them rules and mechanics wise.

It's still adding a talent tree. They are not going to "unlearn" all of their Bounty Hunter talents and skills. It's not easy to change careers, and that's reflected in the cost to add new talent trees.

First, I'd probably see if he would be cool with just putting "Retired" or "Ex-" in front of his career title. Even if he's making the career move to Rebel spec ops, he'll still be known as the "Ex-Bounty Hunter" on the team. From there, he can continue to hone his hunter talents (if they're relevant) or just buy into whatever AoR specialization he had in mind.

If he was looking to completely erase history and pretend like the whole Bounty Hunter thing never happened ... well, he could roll a new character ... If you're a generous GM, you could award him some post-character-creation XP to catch up with the group; but I wouldn't let him exceed the member of the group with the lowest XP.

I don't see how this is different from a Scoundrel turning into a Doctor in EotE. You just buy the new specialization for 10 + (10 x new spec count). So if the Bounty Hunter only has the Assassin specialization, they can buy any of the AoR specialization trees for 30XP, ie: 10 + (10 x 2). Pretty cheap really, they'll probably get some new career skills, and boosting those will be 5XP cheaper each rank, so it pays for itself pretty quickly.

And he doesn't need to lock down the old specialization...there are probably some Talents in the bounty hunter tree that a special ops guy would want...not least of which is Dedication, it would be unfair to lock that option away.

Hmmm, it just occurred to me, and I could be wrong, but you seem to be assuming that an AoR game can't use EotE characters, or they can't join the alliance if they have a mercenary past...? It's not the case, you can use any of the careers in either game for either game.

If it fits better for the character, then I'd allow them to remake their character if it fits better with their background. My AoR beta character is a Commander/Tactician who he has been in every previous version of Star Wars RPG, there isn't anything like that in EotE, the closest thing that would fit would be Mercenary Soldier, which isn't what the character is.

I allowed one of my players to rebuild his character using the Ace/driver spec from AoR as this fit with his original concept of a speeder racer better than the Smuggler/Pilot from EotE. he also had a choice of which driver spec he would use! but he decided the explorer spec wasn't quite right.

However, I would only allow a character to rebuild once based on new specs that might fit the character concept.

Yes, if the character is just progressing forward, then he can just buy new specs that fit his concept. If, however, the character concept is better served by the new careers, then I would allow for a rebuild.
