To glue the later expansion figures (e.g. Age of Chivalry) into their bases, which type of glue should be used?

Have had great success with Crazy Glue. Just a few drops (less is best) works wonders

I believe their instruction tell you to use modeling glue. That didn't hold for me so I used super glue and it worked great.
