Podracing

By Darth Hideous, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Has any of you created podracers, tracks (Tatooine, Malastare ect), options for maneuvers/actions, rules ect. for podracing?

I Know there are some d20 rules in “Secrets of Tatooine”

No, but it would be fairly simple to implement.

A podracer is just a Planetary Vehicle. So, there is already a skill set aside for it.

As GM, just generate a progression system along the track and require difficulty rolls at key points. Allow for the possibility of narrated action to prevent the need to roll, but depending on the narrative, make them suffer for it.

If they slow down through 'a warren of stony pillars, supporting a roof only 10 meters overhead. The pillars pressed so close together that it looks as though your pod is barely narrow enough to fit through' then an NPC with balls (and a successful roll) should be allowed to barrel past them with great ease.

Also, if it is an often used track, veterans of it should be granted a boost die, except in areas that have been drastically changed. Explosions, erosion, dumping of junk material from a mine or dig site....

You could limit to to Planetary Piloting only, but I might also suggest Discipline and Perception. This would be to detect upcoming obstacles and to gauge reaction time to make the level of difficulty for each Piloting roll.

Those could be done at the start. Probably one time would be fine.

Use the general difficulty of the track (distance between obstacles and degree of difficulty used to rank it out for you) as the Difficulty roll.

There's a lot there.... Mostly, just use your best judgement.

Because plot.

OK, off the cuff ideas:

  • Pilot (planetary) is used to determine initiative (or maybe Cool with Agility for ability dice? Seems like better pilots should be able to know when to drop the hammer better in a race). Instead of PC/NPC slots, Initiative determines your starting pole position.
  • Serif has the right idea for the track; several key points requiring rolls (and probably a couple of 'straightaways' that don't require rolls for padding). Having a variety of key points (and noting what success/fail/adv/threat does during those points) is definitely a Good Thing.
  • Gain the Advantage is modified... instead of ignoring Evasive Maneuvers, it allows you to overtake the pole position in front of you. Same difficulties as in the book, and the person you are overtaking can still try to Gain the Advantage on you (at an increased difficulty).
  • After all the key points have been resolved, a lap is completed; the person at the top of the pole has crossed the finish line first. Repeat for X amount of laps to determine the race's winner.

the old WEG book "Black Sands of Soccro" is a really great resource that has some incredible detail on Swoop racing that could be used for swoop racing

IMHO, i think swoop racing is far more interesting then Pod racing.

Ive always loved Podracing; it's like a chariot race, except 1000x more dangerous.

I've always loved sniping at Podracers as they fly by, shooting their equipment that SHOULD make their vehicle stop moving, but they somehow find a full minute while racing by at a lightning pace between obstacles that should kill them if they take their eyes off of them for a second to fix the problem without actually replacing the component.

Because, you know....

Plot.

Check out the preview for Suns of Fortune preview and download the pdf "Taming the Dragon." Pretty straightforward, I think.

Randal: And the lightsaber! You turn it on and it only goes yay high. How does the light know when to stop?

Dante: Um, the Force?

Randal: Maaan that's your answer for everything.

Thanks for all the replies. A lot of inspiration.

I will try and see, if anyone I know has “Black Sands of Soccro” and await the "Suns of fortune" book. And perhaps when I have more time try and put together some of all the great ideas from you.

Still if anyone already has made some actual rules, tracks, handouts ect. I would really appreciate to get my hands on them J

Try looking for it at the D6 Holocron?

Thanks! ;)

It might be worth taking another game such as Formula De and reflavouring it. I know there was a good pod race scenario that had done just that using the Full Thrust rules years ago as well.

This. I added it to a recent adventure, and the players loved it. Had to read it a few times to totally understand the mechanics and dice rolls, but once I did, it was a lot of fun.

Maybe all that "Because plot" stuff would be covered in a Specialization or something?

The only issue then is what happened to Anakin's careers but, for all we know, between ages 0 and 18, you can retrain? Works for me! Heck, I know I've been retraining for a few years...

But you keep having to invest ranks in Braille.

Taming The Dragon calls for a choke point that is only one Swoop wide. The racers going at top speed find themselves side by side going into this choke point and so play a sort of Chicken to see who will pull back and who will fire through it first based on a competitive Cool check. Honestly, probably my favorite moment in the whole of the race (I didn't run the module, just adapted the racing rules) as two of my players and one NPC all ended up beside each other for the first time in the race just in time for it. I got a less than amused look from one of my players, since she is a 5 Agility, 2 everything else character, but she ended up rolling 4 success on two dice and took the lead anyway.
