General understanding: Jury Rigging

By MaddockKrug, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello Star Warsians,

yesterday a member of one my favorite German roleplaying-games related itnernet forums raised this question:

Are you allowed to use the talent "Jury Rigging" several times on the same item? Or is a strict once-per-item-only-usage-policy for this talent?

My initial thought was: Well, could be any of both ways to look at it. It just depends, if you make the wording of the first sentence describing the talent primary, or if you center the talent on its purpose, which is to modify stuff in different ways.

I raised this question on the SW EotE forums from the d20radio.com community as well. And the answer I received there was like: strict reading says once-per-item-usage-policy, but considering unique items from the Star Wars movies like Han Solo's gun or Boba Fett's armor you also could understand it the way that jury-rigging might be applied several times on the same device ...

So: What is your take on this?

Best wishes!

Mad

You pick one item per rank. You cannot apply the effect of the talent to the same item a second (or third, etc.) time.

I actually got a response from Sam Stewart on this, and posted in a separate thread.

In short, Jury Rigged is one item per rank. So if you have three ranks in Jury Rigged, you have to select three different items to modify.

For things like Han's blaster or Boba's armor, they're probably more a case of using the attachment/modification system to enhance their performance.

Fett's armor might be Jury Rigged to reduce the Encumbrance Value, but he's also making use of the Superior Armor attachment, likely the Vacuum Sealed and maybe even Enhanced Optics for his suit of heavy battle armor, with a second rank of Jury Rigged applied to reduce the Encumbrance Value of his jet pack. He's also got talents such as Armor Master and Improved Armor Master to make his armor perform even better... as long as he's the one wearing it.

Han on the other hand might have Jury Rigged his heavy blaster pistol for some extra damage, maybe added the blaster actuating module for even more damage and relied on his high Agility and ranks in Ranged (Light) to offset that setback die on his attack rolls. Everything else is pure skill on his part.

Thank you very much the both of you.
