advice with repaint

By rdobyns, in X-Wing

I am looking for someone that knows how to achieve the same weathered look on the models. I assume they use a type of black ink, but I am unsure how they get it to look so clean afterwards.

Anyone know?

thanks

The ink can be watered down to suit. You direct it with the brush so it mostly stays in the area you want. Generally you don't want to drown the whole model in ink or it will appear very dirty when dry, though that might be what you are going for with a battered freighter etc.

The big danger is that the ink will pool in flat areas that you want to stay clean. This is easily fixed using the brush tip to soak up the excess and blend the reminder, leaving a clean-looking surface.

^^ Good advice. I keep a paper towel handy to dry out my brush head a little if the ink is pooling up. Then with my dry-er brush I'll go back over the area and soak up the rest, and re-distribute the wash over the remainder of my area.

Also it's sometimes nice to highlight again after a wash, going round the edges with a lighter shade.it can give the model real depth.

Your better doing a couple of thin coats of wash than drowning the model too. At least that way you have much more control and can decide between coats whether it is dark enough.

Indeed Rodent, that's how I do it as well..some hilighting and a little dry brushing after can also bring out details an such that you wish accented.

I use an oil wash . Apply a gloss coat to the model, and then dilute some black oil paint. The gloss varnish helps it stay in the cracks. Since its oil paint the excess can be wiped off.

Thanks all, looks like its time to bust out the paints and give it a try!
