Instant asteroids

By Rain King, in X-Wing

Here is a simple way to make some 3D asteroids that I did last week. I picked up a bag of lava rocks from the landscaping section at Home Depot. It's probably a 10 lbs bag and was only $4. I had to use a heavier duty drill bit because they are tougher than they look. I had to borrow the bit from a buddy who called it a "hammer drill."

I figure I'll just set them on top of the cardboard tokens and remove them if a ship lands on the asteroid or you need to measure through it or whatever.

edit: How do you get the image itself to show up here? I tried copying the url in the box that pops up when you hit the image icon, but it says I can't use that image extension here.

Those look really good! Do you have a problem with them leaving grit on the play surface?

Thanks! They got really dusty when I was drilling them, but I washed them out afterwards and haven't had any problems.

Hmmmmm......There's lava rock in my aquarium, but I think my wife would get mad if I grabbed it for asteroids

You can use the pink insulation foam as well, paint causes it to misform and change.. I intend to get some and try it out.. a little cutting and carving should work as well to help crate some cool "rocks" and I want to make a coupls large ones..

Personally never made any asteroids while playing BFG, but I do remember reading about how easy it is to make them.

And rather that typing it out here's some Youtube Vids that were top hits after typing in google "making asteroids" and "making battlefleet gothic terrain"

hope those help.

The second one is what I was talking about.. cool

I have to get this type of thing going too...soon. I have been buying models and working on rules instead.

Indeed Joe, I saw a battle report that had some pictures of some huge asteroids.. lol..mi wanna make a coupke 6 or 8 inch across.. lolthe foam board is a handy tool for it, and the chemicals in paint and such cause it to react.. makes for very authentic looking asteroids I think..

I also recall reading from I think it was a WhiteDwarf Magazine about how using a Hot Glue Gun is a great way to make Craters.

just turn it on and once it's warm press into the foam. It should burn/melt way a nice crater mark. Or the back end of a Fork, Spoon, or butter Knife works for making crater divots provided the piece of foam is large enough. due note that this step would occur before the spray paint/primer stage.

Good stuff guys. Yeah I aim to build a table that is representing an asteroid, with a lot of smaller asteroids all over the thing...that is going to be very fun.

:)

nicely done. so easy when u r shown how. thanx for sharing.

Just don't inhale the vapors, that stuff is not healthy. So it's best to do that in a well ventilated space.

I think I need to pay a visit to a local pet store to get those lava rocks, they are just perfect looking imho.

I agree you need to be careful of the fumes.. good advice none of us mentioned.

Also.. better to get your lava rocks at a hardware store, pet shops tend to up price them as decorations and such.. probably a better price can be had at Lowes or Home depot..

The big bag I bought at Home Depot was only $4. There isn't a whole lot of variation in the sizes of rocks was the only problem I think. That and figuring out what I'm going to do with this other 9 1/2 pounds of rocks.

Sorry for a bit off-topic question but where from one cab purchase those flight stands? Do we get them as separate pieces or just need to buy lot of ships?

if you never need as many stands as you have ships it can be a money saving tip, but there are some online hobby stores you can get similar stands.. Litko has them fairly inexpensive..

FFG dosen't sell them separate, but you can find other companies online that make acrylic range rulers and such. I did a quick search on eBay and found some that are customized in different colors too.

Thanks chaps, will check the ebay. I do have GW's flight stands but they are not just the same :)
