Here is a simple way to make some 3D asteroids that I did last week. I picked up a bag of lava rocks from the landscaping section at Home Depot. It's probably a 10 lbs bag and was only $4. I had to use a heavier duty drill bit because they are tougher than they look. I had to borrow the bit from a buddy who called it a "hammer drill."
I figure I'll just set them on top of the cardboard tokens and remove them if a ship lands on the asteroid or you need to measure through it or whatever.

edit: How do you get the image itself to show up here? I tried copying the url in the box that pops up when you hit the image icon, but it says I can't use that image extension here.
