Critical Damage

By QuinnCee, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, I work at a skating rink and my co-worker and I sit in the both every weekend and enjoy epic struggles between good and evil. Today I delivered a critical hit and he drew a critical damage card which stated he sustained 2 regular damage from the critical, so the question is: does he sustain 3 damage (1 from the critical hit and 2 from the card instructions)? How does that work exactly?

The critical hit, Direct Hit, is left face-up next to the ship card and counts as two hits. You do not draw other damage cards face down.

Ya I know I don't draw anymore, but I was thinking it would count as 1 point of damage from the attack, to produce the critical hit, and then 2 additional damage from the outcome of the critical hit: 3 damage. No?

Nope. The card scores two hits against hull points. That's all.

No. hull damage is calculated by the number of face down damage cards or face up critical cards.

1 Damage and 1 Critical are equal vs a ship's hull points. The Critical just has special effects in addition to the 1 damage.

Fair enough, thanks.

I know you accepted this, but I just pulled out the card and want to point out that it says: "This card counts as 2 damage against your hull." It does not say that the card adds 2 damage. If the card said "add" then your interpretation would have been correct, but it does not say that.

Cheers! Thanks for asking the question rather than just assuming. :)

Also to further clarify the card "Direct Hit" is a " Ship - Critical " so R5-D8 if you're the Rebels can turn that from a 2 damage back to 1 damage.

Yup, and I could have used that droid last night, LOL.

I think this was answered but when it comes to "damage" you don't need to touch the cards until you start hitting hull. When you do it's time to deal a card face down for [hits] against the hull and face UP for [crits] against the hull.

The "problem" I have with the Direct hit card is that while is says it counts as two hits you are supposed to count CARDS when determining if a ship is destroyed. It is a technicality but a ship with 2 hull should require two CARDS on it to destroy it going by what is written in the rules making Direct hit useless. Maybe this is officially altered somewhere and I just don't see it despite knowing how it SHOULD work.

You may be deeply overthinking that. Damage = damage cards. Critical damage = face up damage cards. Direct Hit is a face up damage card that counts as two face down damage cards, unless something flips it facedown and reverts it to a single damage.

Cards Text Supercede The Rules.
