Is it time for a painting sub-forum?

By Lappenlocker, in X-Wing

While it is enjoyable to see some of the custom work folks are doing, I'm beginning to dread using the New Threads link to try to read new threads because I don't do painting and an ever-increasing number of threads are just about that.

Does anyone else think it is a good idea to have a Painting sub-forum to get those threads separated from general X-Wing topics? Maybe we can get the moderators to create such a sub-forum if enough of us thinks it is a good idea.

I'd be happy if we could just get some stickies up in here. Good luck on either account...

If they do that then I also would like peoples army lists to be in its own section as well.

We have a sub-forum for battle reports so why not for painting.

Either way, it's great seeing people's custom paint jobs and I'd be a frequent viewer wherever they are located.

I'd like that

I second the motion for both stickies and sub forums. Both would greatly increase the useability of this growing community.

And while we're on the topic of forum wishes- how about some moderation? Some threads have been pretty nasty lately. People are starting to call each other out but a moderator reminder would go a lot farther.

I've been the moderator on several forums in the past, and active moderation usually makes for a better community than one where the moderators are all but invisible. So I agree with you!

Glad I've only encountered the friendlies so far.

But I have visited some vicious forums that border on childish stupidity. I've not been back. It's a big put off, especially for someone who is just getting interested in a game.

If X-Wing suffers from whining, trolling and generally unpleasant childish numpties then I second the idea of moderation. If not for the sake of other members; then for the sake of potential hobbyists who might be judging a hobby based on reading the topics and posts.

If you do that then make a sub forum for all of the silly ass...Here Me Three Ship Hunnid Point List...What Cha Thinks?! topics on here too.

Yes sir...it gets very ...well...tedious shifting these post.

Unless you are building a serious list for a cool official tournament, we do not care about every detail of how you play. You love it and so do we, but it gets old.

It reminds me of the RPG people who just have to tell you about how cool their character is.

Me no care...

Now play the **** game and show me how good you are at this! And yes...I want (good) pictures (in a well presented battle report) to prove it!

These are actually all really great suggestions for this board. I'm seriously in favour of all of them, and I never say that.

Sub fora (forums?) would be great for all the aforementioned categories. I myself are mostly a painter and get mightily confused with the term "build". To most here it means the writer of the post has created a new stat- or squadron list, to me it means someone has done a conversion or paintjob so subforums will be very handy for me personally.

Sub's are kinda nice that it does make it easier to locate something....but you do need better mod oversite to bump and move stuff that n0obs post in the wrong place. And as a former mod/ admin it could be a full time job on a site with this much traffic. I do like the sub Idea. And it would be awesome to group stuff, but sometimes it gets too confusing for new blood that is not familar with the lingo.

I like the idea of having sub forums so that people can focus on their interests more. I know they have done before and would like to see it done for paint jobs and lists.

I definitely like the idea of stickies. Probably one of the most useful threads is the "I'm new to X-Wing, what do I need to get?", but it gets real old due to the frequent repitition. If it was always at the top of the forum list, new members could find it easily and wouldn't have to start a new topic each time.

As for the rest? I've got mixed emotions about seperating stuff out. Even though I tend to skim the build list threads, I still catch some useful ideas. And if an X-Wing forum isn't the perfect place for these kind of discussions, the why even bother? If they were segregated off into their own area, I would end up skipping a lot of stuff altogether, being worse off for it without even knowing it. And, pictures of anything X-Wing related are always welcome. Collections, mods, repaints, movie clips and even humorous anecdotes add a lot to the discussion. Perhaps we do need to learn not to repeat them over in replies as much, but please don't push them off in some other area.

My biggest turn-off regarding this forum is the bickering. If we could cut that back a bit, that would eliminate the 9 and 10 page topics that don't lead to anything worthwhile while monopolizing most of the time I set aside for this place:

Stay on target - don't attack the person, discuss the topic. If you disagree with what someone has to say, provide your train of thought on why.

Repetition is not persuasion - make a point, then let it go. Repeating your argument over and over and over doesn't make it any more valid. I know this is hard to do when multiple different users respond to a provacative idea, but let everyone have their say without rebuking each reply individually.

Keep an open mind - we all come from different levels of X-Wing experience and Star Wars knowledge. I know, I for one, am fairly weak in the expanded universe arena. It is great to hear about story lines I haven't read or watched. I've learned a lot since I've joined this community. Don't hate me for my ignorance, teach me that which I lack.

I do agree that stronger moderation is probably the most reliable way to enforce common courtesy, but the lack of involvement by FFG in what is posted here suggests it is up to us to behave as responsible galactic citizens.

Agreed, a painting subforum and a list building subforum would help to declutter the main forum area for other discussions.

I don't think there's enough posts to justify an art section. List building may.

A painting subforum would be less about shifting them out of the main forum (as you are correct they make up a small percentage of the threads), but instead make them easier to find. Painting threads are less about active discussion and more about showcasing work or how to do things. They provide information that is useful regardless of new waves changing the meta and provide a repository of knowledge.

For instance if someone starts playing and wants to do some repaints, they can go to this subforum and browse through all of the articles and examples.

Over 20% of the posts on the first page are directly related to repaints as I post this. But I also agree with Eltnot that having them in a sub-forum will help those directly interested in that topic to find posts related to their passion.

I also agree with the excellent suggestion for a build list sub-forum. :)
