What scale are the big ships?

By Taalon Roagh, in X-Wing

Greetings FFG forum community!

Please don't hate me for not being involved in the X-Wing game itself while posting a question in it's forum. But with Games Workshop deciding in it's infinite wisdom to discontinue it's Specialist Games, specifically Battlefleet Gothic, I've been searching for alternative ships for Rogue Trader.

If it compensates you a little, I am considering X-Wing for an Aeronautica alternative.

To cut a long story short, I found 1/1000 scale Enterprise (both from the Enterprise series and the NCC-1701) and Enterprise B. Continuing searches have revealed other ships in that scale, as well as 1/350 and 1/2500 scales. Possibly more, but I got lazy at that point.

But I couldn't leave out Star Wars. I've already concluded that I will be buying the Tantive IV and Rebel Transports. By my strange logic, I have concluded that the Millennium Falcon will make a great Raider/Destroyer.

Hence my question: What scale are the Tantive IV and Rebel Transports?

That way I can make sure the Star Trek ships match.

Somewhere between 1/400 and 1/500. The official details haven't been released yet to confirm scale, but that is based off of rough calculations from the folks that saw them in person at gencon.

We won't hate you for not being an X-Wing fan or player. It is a really fun game and amazingly balanced, so if you decide you also want to play X-Wing with your potential X-Wing ships, I think you might enjoy it.

As for scale, the official scale hasn't been released yet for the big ships. The small ships are 1/270. As Khyros said above, the scale is going to be roughly 1/400 to 1/500.

I should point out, of course, that if you're adapting these to represent different ships, the scale might not be important.

Hopefully, these ships suit your needs. Best of luck expanding your game. :)

They're roughly at 1:Close Enough.

Thank you guys!

Just to answer a point raised by SableGryphon, I will be trying to stay true to the models when it comes to designing the RT versions.

As an example, Tantive IV would be a light cruiser. Port and Starboard lasers or lances, with a strength of 2. Then a Prow armament, which shoots Front, Left and Right, with a strength of 4. Though it's prow lasers/lances will be able to split their fire.

This really is going to be, as much as possible, Star Wars and Star Trek in Warhammer 40,000.

Thank you guys!

Very cool. Hope it turns out awesome. Let us know if you have any mre questions. :)

Will do!

Just thought I'd update on my Google and Amazon searches:

At 1:400 scale we have:

Serenity (didn't like the movie, never watched the series)

N.S.E.A. Protector (been a long time since I saw Galaxy Quest but I did laugh when I saw the model)

Both would contribute to a unique fleet. I might just pick them up.

Star Trek seems to be at it's best in 1/350 scale. I've found a 1/400 Enterprise D, but I much prefer the NCC-1701 A, E and the first Enterprise (as in the one from the Enterprise series).

1:500 scale isn't having much success. But I'll continue the search later.

I was totally kidding, btw, not trying to be snarky. I realize you weren't one of the scale fanatics we get on here sometimes.
I just don't believe they have announced, and would not be surprised if they don't, the exact scale of the transport and corvette. Maybe they did and I missed it, but I think they basically just messed around with sizes until they came up with one that was workable in a reasonable playing area, but large enough that it dwarfed the smaller models to their satisfaction, rather than shot for a specific scale.

The movie does not reflect the series. Series > Movie all day, everyday.

My kind of humour.

But 1:close enough might be just the scale I need.

This is the only official word we have as to the scale, from the original announcement. The way they phrase this leads me to believe that the Transport and Corvette aren't actually at the same scale as each other, of if they are then there's a chance that future big ships won't be.

As CW says, "Close Enough" works, but the tight scale used at the starfighter level is definitely loosening up a bit.

The Tantive IV and Rebel Transport will be the first X-Wing starships released outside of the game’s 1/270 scale. Simply too big to function in the game at that scale, they left us with two options. We could change their scale, or we could leave them out of the game. In the end, we decided these ships were simply too iconic and exciting to ignore, and we invented a new “relative” scale, carefully balancing each ship's playability against its presence on the table. This means you’ll have even more options for your games. You can continue to focus on dogfights and Standard tournament play at 1/270 scale, and you gain the option to play these huge ships in Cinematic Play and the new Epic tournament format.

"too iconic and exciting to ignore"

I most certainly agree with that statement!

To be brutally frank, if FFG hadn't of made the Tantive IV I probably wouldn't be here now.

Or considering collecting some X-Wing for myself.

High quality, pre-assembled and pre-painted models based on my favorite sci-fi at a reasonable price. How can I resist.

Oh why not!?

As I leave the forum for tonight I'll leave you all with this question:

Where to begin with X-Wing?

Before certain cheeky people say "begin by getting the rules", I'm meaning in addition to the starter. Since being a boy, the X-Wing fighter has been my favorite. Since playing Star Wars Battlefront II, the Y-Bomber was a close second. Oh how I enjoyed destroying Imperial Ships. Though I tended to board them and sabotage them from the inside.

So I'm going to be part of the Rebel Alliance.

What do people recommend?

Alright, here are a few suggestions.

First, I recommend getting a core set and giving it a try. Or, find if there are local meetups and see if you can get in on a game there. This will help make sure you like the game.

Second, pick up a second Core Set. This will give you doubles of a lot of important stuff, as well as a good core of ships to start with.

Then, look for ships that you are interested in. Pick up an X-Wing expansion, as it will give you some new pilots such as the epic Wedge. Three X-Wings can be a quite potent list. Since you like Y-Wings, pick up one or two as well as a HWK-290, which has a wonderful upgrade the Y-Wing can use called Blaster Turret.

Finally, consider getting a YT-1300. It's a powerful ship and fun to fly. Further, this will let you have a bunch of different lists you can play with as you find your particular style. By then, I'm sure you'll know what you want to get next. :)

Start with 15 A Wings like I did.......yea, I'm not right.

As an old Aeronautica player, X-Wing is a far better game. AI had some serious balance issues, due to the way orders and timing worked. I was practically unbeaten with my Orks, as you could fire a whole lot of grot bombs, or fly hundreds of cheap ships, out activate the enemy and then you would know exactly where they were for 60% of your ships. Due to the fact that an orders could make the maneuver at a chosen point of your move and go left or right or even go up or down a number of levels chosen at the time you moved, you could then either avoid their guns or fly into their side arc.

X-Wing is a much better game in a lot of ways. Which is a shame as I loved the Speed, Altitude part of AI. And it had some great ships...

BUT hell seeing as all my orks are on magnets, I can wack them on my X-Wing base and makes some rules for them at some point.

@SableGryphon

Sounds like some good advice there. Potent X-Wings is what I like to hear. But even with games like this, there does need to be some balance. Just because I like something, doesn't mean it is the best choice for my gaming style. Always good to have someone remind me not to just go for what looks good....I wanna win too wuhahahahahaaaaaa!

@Prevailing Winds

Yeah....I'll get 15 X-Wings.

@Rodent Mastermind

Be sure to post pictures and your house rules if you do convert your Orks to X-Wing. I've got my own evil schemes for making some 40K opponents. Though I'll be starting from scratch. Aeronautica finished before I even picked up the book.

"X-Wing is a much better game in a lot of ways" I'm already getting that impression

Thanks for the tips

I know what you mean by GW deciding to discontinue BFG. I got a nice fat tax return cheque and thought I'd expand my very small Eldar fleet into something more usable, only to discover that there was nothing available anymore. Bummer.

Bought X-Wing instead - GW's loss! :P
